Saw my intake valves today :-(

Hi,

Spent the afternoon hunting around the engine bay trying to diagnose various noises and just generally tinkering around and thought I would use the borescope to get a look at the valves

Horrible picture quality I know but you get the idea....

I've been reading a lot on this issue so although I expected them to be a bit grim (It's done 56k miles, no real performance mods bar a DCI) I wasn't expecting them to be quite so bad !!

Got a shopping list together now (i.e compressor, vac, shell blaster and port adaptors etc) so I'm going to clean these up myself one weekend...

Probably cost me the same to buy the equipment as it would to get an specialist to do it but at least this way I can clean the valves numerous time as and when necessary, not to mention help out other fellow local 335i owners if that would be of interest to anyone?

There is a very useful thread on the US side of the forum and the guy who did his did so with a portable sand blaster that is available here.

Was thinking of doing the same thing as you.

I tend to use bog std 95 so its not v-power related.

Also, I would think the type of oil and change interval would have more impact as the fuel itself does not contact the valves.

Why do u use bog std 95 fuel when the recommended is minimum 97 on the fuel flap??

It will be interested with someone who has used v-power to do a comparison .

OP I'm in Hampshire too and will no doubt need this doing. So - happy to chip in to the cost of the kit if you'd help me do mine (I'd be willing to help you do yours). You're obvious a competent DIYer... PM me if you're interested.

And +1 re previous post about the fuel used, this makes no difference because the engine is direct injection so the petrol never comes into contact with the backs of the valves (which is why they get so coked up).

spugnut could you tell how often were the oil change intervals? 335i demand 0w-30 or 0w-40 or a different SAE?

What a load of bollocks, why don't you trot on and read your own flap? It actually states 95 - 98.

I have tried both shell optimax and Tesco 99 stuff and REALLY can't tell the difference in performance. The difference in economy was marginal and not worth the 10p per litre extra.

It's got full BMWSH so oil change intervals would most likely have been around 12k-15k miles. Not ideal as we all know, but in my ownership I now get the Oil changed every 6k (ish)

As for grade used I would have to dig back into the service invoices but would be a suitable spec due to being dealer service.

I'm in hong kong so the car's not with me !

I really doubt you're good with car's, if you can't tell the difference normal unleaded and 99 ron petrol.

Those who say they can't tell any different is normally just tight people who can't justified the 10P Different per litre!

Any car enthusiast will run the best fuel they can , ITS ONLY 10 P Different !!

So don't quote things you can't check!

Perhaps I'm not good with cars, perhaps you just wet your pants over the placebo effect?

Don't really know about the optimax stuff, but I use Momemtum and if I put the Tesco "normal" unleaded, the car is definitely less powerful.

normal v/s super

super wins any day!!!!

It has been "proven" that the "super" unleaded does make a difference on the 335i.
