Tinting Question

After searching for an hour or two and not really finding an answer I figured I would make a thread. I'm getting my windows tinted next week with Hüper Optik film, I was originally going to get 20% but the guy at the shop said that with the tint from the factory a 20% film would end up being around 11-13% which would be to dark for my taste. He recommended I do a 40% which would come out around 27-30%. Can anyone who has the Hüper Optik film attest to this? Will the 20% with the factory tint really make that much of a difference or will it still be around 20%? Thanks for the help.

How does he know what your taste is better than you? 40% is really light.

It's not that he knows what I like better than me, I just told him I wanted the 20% film and he asked if I knew that it would be darker because of the factory tint. If it combination really comes out to be a 10% film then that would be to dark for what I want. I wasn't sure if it would really be that big of a difference so I thought I would ask. Any help would be appreciated.

Just look at pictures of cars with 20% and see if that's too dark for you. Forget about what he said. No one classifies tint by the total VLT. It's always the tint film VLT.

When people that say they have 20% tint, they have 20% tint film over the factory tint. So yes, total will be less than 20% but people wont go around saying "my car has 14.56% tint when combined with the factory glass".

I'm pretty sure our cars don't come with tint from the factory. I got 27% and I think its way too light and wish I would have gone a lot darker. Go with 20% as your lightest choice. Anything above 20% is way too light.

They don't use film like you would get from a tint shop but they do have tint from the factory. I think I'll just stick with the 20% from what I've seen it doesn't seem to be as dark as he said it would be and I would rather have a little to dark then not dark enough.

Yeah I know, but im almost 100% sure BMW does not put any smoke in their glass. My glass was clear as day and 100% VLT when the tint guy put his meter on it.

+1 I got 27% and its still too light for me. Doesn't help that I have a black on black e92 with the florida heat...plus people can see me pick my nose

No, 3M. Only brand I ever use for window tint.

No problems at night. 20% isn't limo tint or anything.

Ok? You're in Canada and I'm in the United States so there are different regulations. Want a cookie? Whats up with the attitude?

Sorry if my comment came across as having attitude. Didn't mean it to. And FYI I bought my car in Delaware.

Don't rely on what the guy at the shop says. sit in your car, outside. Have him hold sheets of various tints against your window and decide for yourself what you like best. If you don't have an inherent sense of how dark/light the various tint percentages are, the percentages are merely abstract quantifiers.

I can offer that I have 20% on the rear and 30% on the front. I find that to work out well. I can see out the windows and at night, I don't really need to use the rear view mirror adjustment unless someone has very bright lights and is close behind me.

FWIW, and to offer some sort of relatively objective basis for comparison, most sunglasses are the equivalent of 10%-5%, though sunglasses' percentage of light measures are cited in terms of percentage of visible light blocked rather than percentage of visible light allowed to pass through.

All the best.

this thread is over 3 months old... I've had my car tinted for the last 3 months, and yes there is a factory tinting agent embedded into the glass, at least on the LCI. People need to look at the original date threads were posted and not post on outdated ones unless they post something of use to others or have a similar question, not to try to tell other people their wrong.

the LCI has a factory tint of 70% light transmittance. I have 30% on top of that and effectly being 16%.

Which % did you end up with?

I went with 20% and it ended up being perfect for me, It's nice a dark but when you open the shade for the sun roof it's light enough to not draw police attention.
