BMW 320i Dyno Results!

For those not familiar it's an N20 motor rated at around 185hp from the factory.

It's been rumored that it's basically identical to a 328i only detuned from the factory and so far BMS has not found anything to disprove that. From the factory it runs a modest 8psi and feels like an absolute slug. Stock dyno numbers at 183whp confirmed its neutered status. The factory 328i does ~235rw for comparison.

Initially the Stage1 tune was installed using the default +3psi settings and it perked up to 212whp. At the higher +4psi settings we got 220whp. Pretty close to 328i numbers. Not bad for a simple to install inexpensive upgrade.

After the Stage1 testing BMS threw on the BETA Stage2 for a little fun. There is still plenty of work to do but was rewarded with a best of 266whp showcasing this platforms potential. Up next BMS needs to richen up the air/fuel targets on Stage2, take direct control of the electronic wastegate, and finally do some E85 tuning.

I see it's from Calabasas..... wouldn't that be an N26? I thought that was a California thing....

In any event, those are impressive numbers!

Nice... and the lease deals on 320i are tempting...

Any chance you guiys will tune the Mini Cuntryman All 4 S? My s.o. neads a new car and is leaning in that direction... tuning would make it more tempting

So aside from the smaller diffs and brakes it seems to be an identical car for quite the bargain. Had this been available 2 month ago I would've optioned for the 320 then

Don't forget about the pistons.

Those numbers are pretty damn good. For early stages that is impressive.

That is amazing!! In all my posts and vids i have strongly supported bms stage 1 tune once i installed it. I can definitely feel that huge gain in power. Iam currently using 94 octane fuel in my 320i and running the default tune setting. Iam averaging 730km a tank!!! Cant wait for the stage 2 kit. What type of fuel will we have to use?!? Back to the piston head topic, is the piston made of the same material and just a slightly different shape to up the compression? 266hp is a lot on the engine. Iam not sure how stable it would be on the rest of the drivetrain.

Mike

I have been waiting for this update for a couple of months now.

I got my 320i on January and i ordered my BMS stage 1 at the same time but haven't installed it yet, i wanted you guys to actually try yet on the 320i first.

Now i can install it without hesitation. i would appreciate if we can use this thread as an official one for the 320i drivers.

i would also appreciate if you can upload a pic of the complete setup figures for the 211 setup plus the 220 for reference before i install my kit.

Intresting numbers indeed, nice job!

Once you get some more knowledge, it would be intresting to know what are stable whp numbers i.e. what can we expect on normal Stage 1 (?).

Also, don't forget the smaller diameter exhaust (320i/60,2mm vs. 75mm/328i) and a smaller cat-back. I am sure this has some effects on performance in everyday use.

Guys the half shaft concern is not an issue. Dont let people fool you! As long as your not power braking and trying to perform burn outs all day long your half shafts will hold up. I had a dodge charger rt and the srt guys always told me about how much cooler there half shafts were. 210whp is nothing for those shafts. The concern we should have is the tranny. Is there any differences from the 320-328i in terms of transmission components?

Also in terms of exhaust, nobody has posted solid numbers for exhaust gains. If you want to see a noticeable increase, i would suggest you to get a new down pipe. Good luck passing emissions laws though.

Great numbers on the 320i. To make 266whp with stage 2 is definitely impressive. I'm now leaning towards this than a 328i if the engine can hold the power.

How is this car making the same as stage 2 on the 328i?

Looks like stage 2 for the 328i needs some more r&d

We would love to know the following:

1) Is the 320i engine the same as the 328i engine? Internals and all!?
2) Is the turbo the same as the 328i?

X1

I think we should all be concerned about adding too much boost to our turbos. They can only handle so much. I think stage 2 might be really pushing its limits. I am assuming will have to use e85 fuel mixture. Our compression ratio is going to demand it. 266whp is almost a 90whp increase!!! Thats like an extra 120hp at the crank

If we can get some solid info on our drivetrain parts than this may be the ultimate deal breaker to buying a 320i. ppl can save thousands and get almost same performance of a 328.

The car is 100% stock other than the tune. No downpipe installed, although when they are done with the 320i Stage2 tuning they will put one on for addl testing. Since the motor is basically identical to the 328 once the tuning details are worked out they should make the same power.
