Coilovers vs Springs

Hi guys,

I've never done a suspension mod before, but I really dislike the bottoming out of the suspension on bumps and excessive body roll. What's the cheapest option for me? I have the M adaptive suspension. I don't care for the car to be slammed. Maybe a 10mm drop at most.

The M Adaptive has excessive body roll and bottoms out on bumps?

Kinda regret getting it, but I'm not sure how the standard suspension is, and the VSS is excellent.

Though i might be slightly biased regarding the body roll since I'm comparing with my M3 xD. But the bottoming out is honestly annoying.

Coilovers are the way to go but very expensive. From what I can see and what you are saying, the best option for you are the H&R SPORT springs. They seem to be getting rave reviews. I am actually thinking of doing this mod myself. The super sports are to low for my taste. The sports look awesome and seem to really improve the handling and look.

What about the whole issue of wearing out your shocks?

It will wear them out faster no doubt.

What about the M performance springs? They only drop the M sport suspension by 10mm

The H&R sports are not a super aggressive drop but do drop it enough that the car looks much better. Very little gap and from the reviews, they seem to handle and ride well. As for early wear on shocks/struts. I really do not think there is enough long term info to support the affects of H&R sports in the f30 one way or another. My own personal feeling is that lowering the car with springs only will lead to premature wear on some suspension components. But in the end if I can do this mod with H&R's at 250 bucks as compared to 2k plus for coilovers and get years out of the springs before I have an issue, than I'm good with that result.

yeah, would like to know too,
people keep saying shocks will wear faster, but i was under the impression shocks are fairly cheap to replace? wouldnt initial $250 (springs) and one shocks replacement in the life of the vehicle still be cheaper than $2000 coils?

What if it's an xdrive? I heard that the suspension is higher in the xdrive. What springs would work with the xdrive to bring it down to a non xdrive height?

(H&R Sports are out for the xDrives now. There's a thread with a group buy in it on pg 8-ish of it.)

I had a car on lowered springs and standard shocks. The shocks were still fine after 120,000km's. don't listen to all the b.s. about springs wearing out shocks. Although doubt springs will fix your problem. You will need coilovers.

If you want to eliminate all of the body roll, give yourself adjustable ride height and fully maintain the functionality of the Adaptive M-Suspension (Adjustable dampening) the KW DDC Coilovers are probably your best option.

They are expensive, I won't even try to BS about that. But, its basically an OEM++ coilover setup. You can still control the dampening settings from your BMW Controls, and also with their iPhone app. Its a pretty neat system all in all, and you'll probably wish the car came with suspension like this from the factory.

KW DDC Coilovers for the F30

Sorry X-Drivers : It is only available for the RWD F30
