cracked windscreen
I was driving along on sunday about 55mph behind a car. Stone hit the window and now there's a 8" crack. BMW want around £ 400 to replace it. My insurance would give me £100 towards it or I can pay my £75 window ex and the insurance will get auto glass to fix it. Bmw say the plastic parts either side of the window have to be replaced and there like £35 each. is it worth going to bmw or will auto glass do just as good of job? |

Thats what I feel like but if I went bmw and the same thing happened again id be so mad! Plus I have mods I want to do. Would it be a option to buy the new plastics so that auto glass would definitely use the new parts.

I understand what you're saying and it does suck to have to deal with an unforeseen repair bill when there are mods to be done. If you do choose to go to an outside vendor for the glass. I would suggest that you tell them that BMW states that you have to replace the plastics when replacing the windshield. If they say that they will be doing just that, then you're good to go. If they say that it is not necessary, then that could be an issue. Let them know they need to replace the plastics and get it in writing before the job is done of exactly what they are replacing. Of course the outside vendor is more cost effective for you. Just be sure the job will be done right and that means getting all the facts in writing before the job is done. This way you're covered.

Your insurance company is in a business of providing the cheapest quote. This also means that in order to indemnify loss, they'd rather save themselves a few shillings too. But do not let this insurer-nominated-supplier relationship restrict your choices.
First of all, if the car is new, or a distinctive car, an expensive car, marque of distinction, etc etc, why would you let the insurance 'recommended' repairer stick inferior copy parts in? Insist on OEM. Secondly, make an informed decision about who you want working on your car: someone acknowledged and recommended for their workmanship, or someone working for a company that's in bed with the insurance company? This distinction is important and the key in making that decision. And when the insco dig their heels in and impose limits (on what they will pay to non-approved) or PENALISE you - their client - for NOT DOING AS YOU'RE TOLD (by doubling your excess, for example) there are various routes to go down in terms of competition guidelines and consumer detriment. I can recommend Euro Windscreens, and if you like, I can put you in touch directly with the boss who'll do you a cracking job - pun intended. |

I ended up booking in with auto glass who insurance work with. I asked them before and they change the plastics either side of the window that bmw say need changed.
On the plus side, to company that do it are changing lots of windows every day, compared to my dealership who do the odd one. Its ment to be getting replaced on sunday. |

They asked me a lot of questions about what extras my car had, like heads up display adaptive headlights and so on. Will find out tomorrow. Fingers crossed.!

I got my windscreen replaced by auto glass. I was very impressed by the guy that done the job! He told me that bmw use them to change there windscreens and that the rubbers either side of the windscreen don't need to be replaced because bmw said they do and will charge u £40 each. He took them off and showed me. No broken clips and go back on perfect. I know the glass doesn't have to little bmw logo but am over it.

In the US I've found some aftermarket windscreens to have bad distortions where the glass is bent.

Auto glass is a company that come to your home and work place to change your window.
Am still happy with the job that I had done. I guess they will use there own glass because they are based all over the uk and its cheaper because it doesn't have the little bmw badge on it. They also give you a 10 year warranty on the job they have done. When they do a job for bmw the dealership supply the glass for them. |

Yes. Its aftermarket glass, but seems to be from a decent global company. Hopefully.
