car making sound when idle in neutral gear

I have e92 manual 328
my car makes funny noise when idle in neutral
Not so noisy but little rattling noise continuously but when i push my clutch in, the noise goes away.

Can you guys tell me what it could be and if i need this fixed or if I can just live with it. Someone told me something about bearing..

Might as well change your clutch while you are there if it has high mileage

If the noise goes away when you push the clutch in, it is not release bearing.

Bring it to a mechanic to check out, maybe it is normal tranny noise.

assuming the noise is not too loud and doesn't happen all the time, then this is normal for these cars...my car has been doing it since day one, and it has not gotten any worse, in fact it might have actually improved in terms of how often...

Would like to bump this thread. I have an 06 330 manny tranny w/ 107,K mi and this noise just started happening. Only when in neutral and clutch fully out. Seems to be more pronounced when really cold (but I can't swear to that). Doesn't sound like a normal noise that you should forget about. If I depress the clutch even just a little way, it goes away.

C'mom you Bimmer experts! Help us out here!!!

My '07 335i did this. My '08 335i does this.

I've met countless other people who have this same sound.

I've heard it's one of the most common things about the E9X BMW's, and that it is nothing to worry about...but I'd be curious to know if I should actually be worrying.

It's also rather annoying when sitting in the car with it running...and I can only hold the clutch in for so long haha.

It definitely sounds like the throw out bearing. Don't bother worrying about it unless you really cant stand the sound you really want to change it, however it will come back once the new one does the same. It's an easy fix if you're already doing the clutch, if not it's expensive and cumbersome.

Learn to love it, that's how I deal with it lol

Doesn't it make sense that if the throw out bearing is making that kind of racket, that it's failing? I can only imagine that if it fails in there and comes apart, it's gonna be a bad deal!!

I agree that if replacing the clutch this is an east repair. But my clutch is fine. Guess I just have to hope the throw out bearing doesn't disintegrate!!!

Definitely get that throw out bearing replaced sooner than later. You don't want to get stranded.
