First 335i Track Day Today.

Stock M Sport suspension with Dunlop Runflats on and on a modified roadcourse/autocross course top 5 out of 44 cars. Mostly porsche's, the only cars to beat me were a modified Z06, a C6 Z06, a 700hp 996 911, and a 996 911 turbo. The modified Z06 (C5) and the 996 911 turbo (somewhat modded) only beat my time by 3 and 2 seconds respectively. Everyone else only got within 4 seconds of my time or alot farther behind. E90 FTW. There was a vert e46 m3 that posted his fastest of 10 seconds behind me.

Autocross does not equal track day...

Road Race course = track day
Drag Strip = track day
Autocross = haulin ass in a parking lot for 55 seconds X 4.

Admittedly I've never taken my cars to a track or a strip, but I'm curious as to why 14 seconds x 4 at a drag strip qualifies as a track day whereas 55 seconds x 4 in a parking lot does not?

The drag strip is a track of sorts...the autocross course is usually a parking lot...abandoned air field...or just a bunch of unused asphalt/concrete. I competed a bunch in 2000/2001/2002 in autocross....in 2001 alone I did 17 events...X 4 or more runs each event. Its fun..but spending 3/4 of a day or all day long at an autocross for three to four 50 second runs got old after a while.

I'd much rather do a track day with 4-5 twenty-five minute sessions at a road course now.

I hear what you're saying, but I feel that the OP posted about his experience at a sporting event, and your response was to tell him only that it wasn't a track day. In the traditional sense, no, an autocross isn't a track day, but it's still a legal racing event and can be rightfully interpreted as a day at an autocross track.

I'm just saying that I'd be somewhat discouraged posting on a board about my autocross experience if the response was "an autocross isn't a track day". It may happen in a parking lot, but it still takes quite a respectable level of skill - I'm sure you can agree.

Sorry, I'm not trying to cause an argument - I just want the OP's post to be recognized for its content rather than its choice of terminology. Everybody has to start somewhere!

understood...I just question the use of the word track here. Some autocross courses you can frickin fly at...(the ones built by the corvette guys, for example). I have hit the rev limiter in third a few place before....yes, we were haulin then.

BTW, FWIW, I am really not a drag strip guy...never have been.....never will be.

Yup, I was still hitting about 90 Mph on the straights of our autocross course at the Air Force Base. Its still takes pretty good skilled driving to excel in these events. If it were a seperate course instead of a parking lot with cones, I guess it could almost take the same kind of driving any ways. Some people believe autocross it a little more technical with the many sharp turns, compared to wider radius high speed turns on typical "tracks".

That's nuts! I would love to do that. I never get out of 2nd in any AutoX I've ever done.

I agree, I like Mather the best (and when I went to UCD it was close to me), but Atwater is not bad too. Who do you run the most with? American Auto-X? NASA? SCCA? I think I'll be at the American AutoX one on 9/8.
