Car jerks when it is about to stop in sport mode?
Hey guys! Just wanted to get your opinion on this. I have an 07 328i e92 that when I drive in sport mode I feel like it downshifts real harsh and will jerk me forward before it hits a complete stop. It does not do it in regular drive, but it Does it EVERY TIME in sport mode. It's been going on since I bought the car at 55k and has a CPO warranty until December. I've brought it to the dealer, duplicated the problem on a test drive with the shop foreman and he said that its not normal. They took it in, and ended up telling me the car was fine and just to not drive it in sport mode.... I lol'd because I bought the car for the sportiness of it haha.
Anyways maybe it is normal? it gets pretty bad sometimes, as if the gear releases and then jerks me forward then catches again. Do any of you guys experience this?? I'm thinking about taking it to an Indy shop to see if they disagree with the dealership and actually might find something wrong and to just get the car inspected. Maybe i can get a few things fixed before warranty expires. Idk, what do you guys think? |

I have experienced the same in the past, although I do not normally drive in "DS" mode. I thought that when you are in "D" mode the transmission starts out/downshifts in 2nd gear as compared to "DS mode the transmission starts out/downshifts in 1st gear.
Possibly the jerk that is experienced is the transmission shift into1st gear which of course is a lower gear ratio. Also, doesn't it seem like the first shift from a full stop is shorter when in "DS" mode versus "D" mode which would make sense starting out in 1st, the shift is quicker versus staring out in second and winding it out a little further before the shift. Any other thoughts on this??

Mine does it too, it's hard to say if what our cars are doing are the same as yours. Mine doesn't throw me out of my seat but you can tell its downshifting that's for sure. The only thing I can think of is it downshifts at higher rpms just like it up shifts at higher rpms. Seems more sporty that way and you will also be in the correct gear to take back off again. If you dive into a corner fast in ds mode you can speed back out of it. If you tried that in drive your tranny would be in a gear to high and drive out like you were conserving gas lol. Hope that makes sense.
As for the dealer telling you not to use ds mode cause something isn't right but they cant find any issues seems really strange and unacceptable. |

Exact same symptoms as what i had. Car felt jerky in any mode. When the car was getting warmed up, it would clunk into first gear upon moving from a stop. After the oil change, it felt buttery smooth through any gear. Shifts in DS is very smooth as well, none of that jerking that had been exhibited before. i don't know if you guys have the same problems as i did but a tranny oil change helped alot.

Not sure if this is what you're talking about but in sport mode whenever you go high rpm's it holds it for you at high rpm's incase you were planning to push the car some more. If you dont it drop's down and feel's a little jerky, but as far as I know that's normal for every e9x

Old thread but still relevant to current owners.
I've noticed this too in DS and thought I had brake issues at first. But it just seems like it chooses to downshift at a stupid rpm level. I believe it's letting the rpms drop too low before shifting. In D this issue doesn't exist or is at least less pronounced to the point where it isn't an issue. The odd thing to me is that in "Manual" mode, the downshifts aren't jerky and are much more like in D. I find this strange because I would have thought that M and DS would have the same downshift profile. Because of this I prefer to only use DS when I'm not dealing with city driving. And if I want a sporty drive, I use 'manual'. If I do use DS in the city I slap it back to D when I see a red light in the distance. I hope you manual owners appreciate me using the term in quotes for my automatic |

OP, it is your car downshifting. You should be able to notice it, but it shouldnt be very harsh. Do you have issues upshifting as well? Edit: Awe shet, this guy got me posting to a 3yr old OP. SOB. To the guy above, DS Mode doesnt let the RPMs get below a certain point while braking, M mode does. |

My car is doing the same. Car will jerk forward a little when it just about to stop. (Smooth braking)
My alphina flash made it less jerky, but still can feel it. The only downside is it shifts to 1st even in D mode. So it happens all the time lol |

With an automatic I have 2 less things to worry about...
...well 3, I don't have my wife complaining about driving a manual if she needs to use the car. Does you 6MT have a spouse mute button? I couldn't find that feature. To the OP, yes mine jerks a bit more in DS. Most noticeable are VERY abrupt up shifts at light throttle. |

Can also confirm DS mode not as smooth on the shifting - kinda glad to hear it's not only my car. I always use the steptronic or D if I'm in traffic and feel lazy.

My 2011 335xi does the same when coming to a stop when I am in DS or "manual" mode. It seems to jerk forward a little like shaking back and forth a little (like 2-3 times) when I am braking softly and smoothly and thought I had stopped. It's far from anything "earth shattering" though and not too jerky. It's there though and noticeable, but nothing bad - maybe because my car only has 35,500 mi. It will probably be more pronounced as the mileage goes up. Plus I have to change the tranny fluid. It's 4.5 years old and has never been changed. I look forward to changing it because the shifts in all modes have gotten jerky and not as smooth as they used to be. The car used to have buttery smooth shifts and I would barely feel it shifting up until about 29-30K mi.. After that it gradually started jerking even in D. At first I thought "oh great, I am going to need motor or tranny mounts", but I am glad to hear fresh trans oil should make it smooth again.
Interestingly enough my wife's '13 Accord did the same thing when coming to as stop and it was more pronounced than my 335's, to the point that it was annoying and everyone was complaining about it. Honda came up with new software in '14 and after the dealer flashed the ECU all that shaking and jerking went away on the Accord. That was a big relief because it was pretty bad and was doing it in both D and Sport mode. I wish BMW would correct things like that by flashing the ECU. I think Honda lately is paying a lot more attention to owner complaints than BMW does. BMW does what they think we want, and only marginally tries to improve things. I am driving a 2016 535xi loaner, and it has the worse road feel and the softest suspension in any Bimmer I have driven. They haven't changed a thing (except it's pretty fast, I think faster than my 335xi). Harry
