F10 M5 or Used 911 Turbo

Hi Everyone:

I am a new member as of today, although I have been enjoying m5post for a long time. My 40th birthday is coming up, the kids have gotten older, and I have been contemplating adding a mid life crisis car to my current kid mover. The blessing also has to be given by my beautiful wife, and if she does here is my conundrum:

I have been wanting a new M5 forever and I love the F10 as my dealer had one in the showroom. After reading so much about it, it was amazing to see it in person (Singapore Gray/ Sakhir Orange interior). The ultimate sensible mid life crisis with the ability to still shuttle kids around! However a friend of mine who is a car enthusiast, owns not one but two black on black Porsche 911 Turbo Coupes. One is a 2008 with 8000 miles and the other is a 2010 with roughly 9000 miles (Pristine cars that never get rained on!). He is looking to unload one and would want roughly in the low $80s for the '08 and mid $ 90s for the '10 . This is roughly new F10 pricing money so here is the question what would you do?

Well, M5 is a perfect "old guy" car - it's big, soft, quiet, and will provide with more steering "assist" for feeble geriatric hands, so...

Seriously, though, just drive both of them and see what your soul tells you

Being a Porsche owner myself you should read my comparison review. Totally different rides. Ideally I would love both but if you just had to have one ummmm... I would so hard pressed to pick. The 911 turbo is a really special car and one of the best DD super cars out there.

The M5 is an amazing car, but my kids are still tiny, so it makes a very convincing proposition. I always advise people to get the smallest car possible. If u don't need the people lugging capability of the M5, get the 911. No sense carrying around all that size and weight if u don't use it.

M5 much better all-arounder for a one-car solution, but everyone needs to own a 911 Turbo at some point. As a warning, unless you are on a race track, an F10 M5 is going to be nearly as fast as stock 997TT--- if you want unlimited M5-spanking power, you might wast to budget for some mods on the Turbo......

I don't have direct experience with either car, but I imagine they're sufficiently different beasts that you'll probably have a clear pull towards one over the other after you've driven both -- and weighed factors like practicality if that matters to you.

Out of curiosity, why does your friend have two 911 Turbos that are the same color, body style, and generation (both are 997.2 if I'm not mistaken)? Seems random unless just loves a black 911 Turbo Coupe so much that he can't be without one even while one is in for servicing. If I had that kind of money to burn, I'd have gotten a Turbo for the road and a GT3RS for the track seeing as those two models are similarly priced.

I own both with my M5 in route. 911 Daily driver is subjective. If you drive from your house to an office building, work there all day and drive home...sure.

If you drive to work, leave often for work and run errands, buy anything bigger than a sandwich, get in and out of your car a lot...absolutely not. climbing in and out is a pain.

I am selling my 911 because I need a car that has room for more than 2, function and a trunk.

The 911 is good only when driving is the reason to drive. If you enjoy driving as a hobby, lights out get the 911.

If you want a cool car but have a busy life and spend a lot of time in your car, get the m5.

I drive my Tahoe everyday because after several days in a row of the 911 I want to drive it off a bridge.

But if the wife says go grab a gallon of milk, I take the circuitous route and rock the 911 with some loud tunes!

Agreed. It is doable, but if you have anything else in the garage, the 911 will not be your DD after novelty wears off.

Last time I drove my 997TT was to the track...

He has two because the 2010 has 20 more horses and paddle shifters! The stealer would not give him a reasonable return on his '08 for a trade in, so he kept it!

Thank you for your insight as only someone with both would know. As I would not want to drive my 911 off a bridge, I am starting to lean toward the M5. I am still going to keep the kid mover, but would like more room to carry my sandwiches around than a 911 would allow!

I sold a 2006 997 S and bought a new 2009 997 TT, and then proceeded to modify it enough to make it "too much car" for a DD. After wrapping up nearly 170 large in the TT I sold it with 5K miles for just under 100K

I agree, everyone should own a Porsche TT once in their life to get it out of their system. If I were to get another P car it would be a new S, not a Turbo. Getting out of the 997 was getting tougher for me at 61

Don't have a turbo but it is a GT3RS. Totally agree. Regardless of which 911, it's a sports car. Not a sporty car like the M3 or a sports sedan. It's a sports car and with that there are a lot of compromises. Mainly being getting in and out of the car and just "using" it. You really need both However, personally, I would always buy a 911 and always lease an M car. 911 turbos never get old. They just come into themselves. Maybe because they always look the same .

If you had to only have one car and it is your daily, the M5 is the better choice given it's an all rounder. But a 997.2 911 turbo is supercar hotness and in an entirely different league.

same dilemma

I ask myself same question almost everyday. unfortunately I have chosen yet. I love both cars.
Whatever I choose, can't be wrong.
I change my mind everyday. specially when I demo either car.

Wow! Have the 997.2TT 's really depreciated that much? Weren't they in the $160's sticker? If you are offered the '10 at a great price perhaps consider getting the TT with the idea that you will not lose any money on the deal, and flip the car in 6 months when the M5's are in more supply with resultant better deals to be had.....

That being said, I really like the Porsche brand but couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger on the 911TT (or Panamera TT, for different reasons) in the two years since my last M5 due to ingress, egress issues and the killer combination of performance and comfort offered by the M5.

Hmm.. interesting perspective. Honestly after having the 911 for 2 years I miss a four door sedan with a trunk. I miss the comfy seats of BMW and I miss picking up client and not being judged for having "wow a Porsche". I will definitely be back in one .. but I don't think I can have it as my only vehicle now that my wife is using the SUV everyday for our new little guy.

BTW if you are going to Porsche you need to go 997.2 there were so many enhancements that are key in my opinion.

That is interesting. I would think the opposite. Having little kids means car seats and diaper bags, stroller, more stuff than you ever thought you would need in your life.

Plus, even with a little car seat in the back you have 2 problems. Having to pull them in and out of the car through your door instead of a back door. And, the biggest IMO, if hit by another car your kid is 6 inches from the outside world.

911 isnt built to take on an SUV impact to the rear. It has 4 seats but I always saw it as 2 and room for a briefcase.

Scared sh*tless to put my son back there.

I know that amenities are not the reason why we drive these cars, but you will be very disappointed with the 997.1 electronics - they simply are not modern for an almost 6-figure car. The 997.2 cars were a decent upgrade (that is what I have), but they still are not as advanced as the new BMWs (not having BT streaming sucks!).

That being said, my 997.2 became my DD when I traded in my Cayenne and was waiting for my 5er to come and I really enjoyed driving the 911 to work every day. Sure, driving a bigger car is more convenient, but the 911 is much more exhilarating. The BMW will never drive as small or agile as the 911.

However, I 100% agree with the previous posters - if this will be your only car, get the BMW - it is nice having the option of not driving the small car.
