First BMW trying to get a 2013 335i
I am trying to purchase my first BMW(also, the first I am paying for). I have been trying to find a bimmer that I like since about June 2011. In May, I came up with the decision of buying a 335i after a brief test drive. Since not to many were a available I decided to wait, to not much luck; So I decided to wait for the MSport and see if I liked it. I took a test drive last night, and fell in love with the car, I can't get it out of my mind; The problem I have been having is negotiating the price of a 335i of any kind, and an msport to boot. The car I am trying to purchase is a 2013 M Sport 335i with Tech/Premium packages and upgraded sound. Other options are really just perks(parking package/split-fold down seats, etc). I was able to find 5 of them in the last two days; I live in socal. I found 2 that I really liked, one was in Santa Ana, and the other in Ontario. The both were listed around $56,920. I have been doing heavy research on this forum and other sites the last 4 days before I went in, the only deal I was able to get is $1200 off after tax(at the Ontario dealership). The car would have been $60,000 with that out the door. Every time I go around invoice, about $750(above) before tax, I get some info about how there isn't many out there and how they only make 6% profit margin on the car. I also tired at another dealership for a 2012 sport line 335 that retailed around $53,000 and was given a straight no, with invoice price. I was wondering if anyone had any tips or advice on getting a car like this lower, or am I just asking for too much off? Thank you for the time.

You have to ask does this dealer "need" to negotiate with you?
If you have 1 BMW dealer in a 100 mile radius, then the answer is probably not. They know that they'll probably be able to get some sucker to come in and buy the car near MSRP. They also know they only have a set allocation of cars, and 335i's are usually a smaller fraction of that allocation depending on your location. Timing is also a big issue. Dealers are more likely to deal right at the end of the month because they know they have to meet quotas. Early in the month they're less likely to care. Ultimately you're the one who controls the sale. Because you have a set price you're willing to pay and you can either pay it, or walk away. If you have a number of dealers in the area go to each of them and keep haggling until you get something closer. $1200 off is a joke IMO. If you're in CA there should be a lot of dealers to choose from. If you have to have one of the cars on the lot, they may be less likely to deal. Get the invoice price on the car from BMWconfig.com FYI I got my 335i (about the same MSRP $57k) for $1000 over invoice, before the $1000 Olympic Credit that just ended. So if they're only willing to give you ~$1k off get up and walk out.

$1200 off MSRP is not a good deal at all.
I would write down a number IE $500 over invoice and then set a ceiling on that price IE $800 is the highest you're willing to go after which you walk out. Or you can just avoid the haggling and give $800 over invoice and stick to it. I tend not to show much emotion when I test drive as the dealership can use that to thier advantage if you show a load of excitment and they know you want the car badly. Just my $0.02 about that. |
