IL State Police

how fast can you go on the highway for a state trooper to just give you a ticket? i got arrested in Indiana back in the day for wreckless driving because I was going 90 in a 55 zone. that's unheard of in IL, my friend just got a ticket for 100 in 65 zone a week ago.

i was juss wondering, does anyone know the maximum allowed over for it to just be a ticket that u can fight? i dont want to go through the hassle of them impounding my car and getting arrested lol

anyone ever get a ticket for like 100+ by an IL state trooper?

gracias

I haven't been caught speeding in years. Typically, the troopers don't bug you until you get 15 mph over the speed limit. Twenty-five over, you're relying on their tender mercies, as I think that can be classed as wreckless driving.

lol lucky you, ive got tickets for 15 over all the time.

what sucks is in a couple of those instances I usually was going like 10 over and they pushed it up to 15 just so it wont get thrown out

ive seen cops cruise at 80 in 55 zone then get off on an exit to have coffee at a gas station (no emergency) lol

I've got an advantage - I'm in my early 40s. According to comments I've seen from peace officers, they're more lenient with speeding from older, presumably more responsible drivers. They're more likely to ticket someone in his 20s doing 15 over than some guy that looks like their accountant.

You can't get a ticket in IL for doing above 100. Because the officer has to
arrest you. I know cause I was doing 135 a couple of hundred miles before
Joliet and he eventually wrote me for 95

Paid $95 and that was it and my insurance didn't find out about it cause at
the time I had my European license still and the car was registered in CA.

It really depends on how the cop feels that day. I average probably 80 whenever I drive on the highway, but I've only gotten pulled over once during highway driving in 10 years. I got a ticket for going 75 that day.

The strange thing is I've never even owned a radar detector. Granted I've borrowed my friend's V1 during road trips, but I usually follow traffic or go a bit faster on the highway. On local roads I typically don't go more than 7mph over the limit. I hope I didn't jinx myself.

I was picked up for 110 in a 55 a couple of times. Arrested both times, was lucky enough to have been released from the scene on my own recognizance both times. That was almost a decade ago.

Both times the cop was amused at how the V1 was not useful in a pacing situation - both times were middle of the night, could barely see the other car (about 1/4 mile behind).

i out smarted a state trooper. this was on 55 right before Springfield, il. he was hidding off the to the side of the road. i blow by doing 150 mph. thank haven there was an exit, i got off. think about it how long it would take him to catch up to me. took him like 30 seconds, to pass the exit, next thing i know i see him just fly passing the exit. i decide to lay low and put gas in at this point. was never caught.

my buddy is a state trooper in IL, works the toll roads around chicago land.

double the legal limit is considered wreckless driving... you won't get arrested for anything under 110... at least on the toll roads. Usually they just want 1. your money and 2. to not have to do much that day so my buddy says usually if youre doing something substantial enough to get their attention you'll get a ticket (ie, weaving through traffic at 75mph and abruptly changing lanes looks much worse than going 85 in a 65 but staying in your own lane). also, they don't want to hassle with taking you in to the station... especially a little further out from the city where they patrol up to almost 100 miles away from their home station in some cases. taking you in means less tickets and though the idea of "quotas" has always been quickly dismissed by any cop i have been friends with, it still looks good to bring in some money for the city/county/state. i've been pulled over 4 times in my life, 3 in one year when i was 18 (had a 3 month suspension too). 2 times, I was under the 15 over mark and was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. the two others I was doing 110mph and 121mph (i remember cuz it was as fast as my old accord would go). The 121 I actually got really lucky and slammed the breaks quickly enough to get a 84 in a 65 (i'm guessing he also rounded down a little). the second time i wasn't so lucky and got smacked with a 103 in a 75. I thought I was going to jail no doubt but he just took my license, handed me a ticket for $350 bucks and sent me on my way.

it does depend on the cop too... some guys are nice, some just want to teach you some dumb lesson by ruining your day (usually the guys who were douche bags in HS and got picked on, now they over enforce their authority).

either way, a good radar is a smart investment (x50, v1) and my buddy said the nicer you are to the cops, they nicer they'll be back to you.

youre seriously lucky because if he even caught your plates you'd have a nice warrant out for your arrest... like i said double the limit = you go to jail and maybe worse.

In populated areas

I drive the Tri-State tollway (I-294) every week day and for the most part if you don't stand out (weaving in and out or going a whole lot faster than everyone else) you stand a good chance of not getting a ticket.

There are days they do blitz's where they let their presence be known and ticket for every little infraction but those days are rare. The state has little money to spend on hiring extra troopers so your chances are good you won't get caught.

Truth be told in rush hour you are lucky if you can speed.

Outside of populated areas

In Illinois (again for lack of troopers) as the others have mentioned 15 - 20 over the limit is pretty safe but you never know. They do use airplane surveillance but I haven't seen it used for quite some time (again a cost cutting thing). Be very careful if you ever go into Michigan or Wisconsin, they ticket everything.

I agree. You can do 80 fine all the way up to the Wisconsin border on 294/94 without trouble, but once you get over, slow down to 70-75!

It is a rare event that I see a cop waiting on the side of the road, but I always assume there's one each time I drive.
