Prices of 335i parts have come down quite a bit ... indy shop or ext warranty?
Taking a look at tisherBMW, it seems like many of the failure prone 335i parts have had a significant reduction in price over the last few years.
Turbos are $695 / ea. (used to be $2k each!) Water Pump $495 Injectors $100 / ea. (used to be $300!) Based on this information, lets say something catastrophic goes wrong with the car within 100k miles. Worse case scenario is that the most that one would spend is the sum of all those parts in 100k miles. You're not likely to replace the same part again in that 100k mile. So that's $2485 total in parts. The extended warranty is in the $3000+ up to 100k miles. But yes, I have not factored in the labor. My question is, the labor can't be that bad compared to the dealer rates? |

Thats a very good question. i'm going to call some local shops and see what they would charge for labor and parts for these maintenance items. I know most shops won't warranty the part if you just bring it in, so the Tischer discount price might be irrelevant.
My dealership is quoting me msrp of $4,300 for the 7 yr/100,000k extended warranty. I'm at 44,000 miles now and need to come up with a game plan or $4,000 in the next few months. I think if you are fairly mechanically inclined, or have willing friends that are, then skipping the warranty may be the way to go. Of course, that doesn't include things like idrive failure, catostrophic engine failure, etc. I gamble either way I guess. Damn, if i'd just leased I wouldn't be debating this. |

From what I have been reading, some SA are acknowledging that only 30% of the vehicles come in for out of warranty repair. Perhaps that is higher for the pre-LCI 335i. And also speaking to a BMW technician who has been working at BMW for about 10 year, he states that most of the car repair issue happen after 120,000km (75,000 miles).
I can only conclude that BMW has to be making money off the extended warranties that don't claim any repairs during the extended warranty period. I know ... will I be the one who falls under the category who has a major repair after the BMW original warranty ends. Btw ... question: can most independent shops program the fuel injectors to your vehicle. |
