Beating a Dead Horse - 328xi or 335i (coupes)
Planning on placing an order.
Priced out the features I wanted on a 328xi coupe and it came out to 45K even. I thought - OK, this is the car i want, that's it. Then just for fun, I priced out a nicely equipped 335i coupe and it came out to only $800 more. It seems like the difference in performance is substantial and I've recently been hankering for a sports car (midlife crisis in early thirties with no wife, no kids?). I wish I had not priced out the 335i since I'm most likely going to hit the 328xi (it's my daily driver, live in NoVA - have had horrible experiences in the winter with previous RWD BMWs). I won't have second thoughts, but I think I'll be letting out a little sigh when I go to pick up my baby. Sorry, just had to let it out... |

Unless you plan on taking the car to Summit Point, I think the 328xi is plenty of power. Plus, traffic sucks in northern VA. That being said, both cars look equally beautiful standing bumper to bumper. I wouldn't worry about it. Enjoy!

You could wait a few months and pick up a 335xi coupe.

I would let finances decide--there is some satisfaction to be had by getting what you want and not looking back. But there is also the time value of money working against obtaining such gratification.
The way I see it, how comfortable are you with the cost of the 328xi? If you're very comfortable, then it comes down to how much more the 335 is. C'mon now, that could be 1/4 of an annual bonus, so it's not nothing, but it's not the end of the world. If you're keeping this car a long time, more justification of the 335. If you're gonna have to juggle things to get the 328xi, then all bets are off on the 335. I personally don't think you need AWD in NOVA. Only you can decide which car to get, because you'll have to live with the decision. Good luck. |

Thanks for the replies. More of a commentary than anything else and just to see if anyone mentions anything that I haven't considered. As 070 put it, it's more of "value for money" working against the satisfaction of my purchase. For instance, if the 335i coupe was priced 5K over the 328xi coupe than I'd just "feel" better about signing for the 328xi. If it's only $800 more, why not get 70 more hp?
I've positioned myself where I'm flexible on price and could accommodate significant swings in price. It's the first time I haven't had a set budget for a vehicle and I've found myself flip flopping because of it. The more I think about it, I should just stick with the parameters I set for myself: Coupe, AWD, Xenons, Auto Dimming Int/Ext Mirrors. Yes, I know this is a bizarre combination of requirements, but aren't we BMW drivers known to be very particular? Is the 335xi coupe a joke or legit? My current lease is up in Sep and I probably wouldn't be able to wait that long. Alas, another point to consider if this is true... |

I was placed in similar situation before but instead i was considering 328i. I test drove the 328i myself and it was fast and handles great. I placed an order for a 328i (which im suppose to be driving right now if i got it, it was May production).
In the process I took a look at the bmw website and realized the price difference between 328 and 335 was about 2000cad (which i later find out i was comparing it with the 328xi instead), but none the less I searched for all possible sources comparing 328 and 335 on magazines and different sort of forums, it seems to me that the extra money will be well worth it consider the extra "driving pleasure", fun factor and the fact that 335 already comes with power seat and moon roof. On top of that the 335 has a much better transmission (AT or MT) which should be smoother than the 328's. The drawback though would be the fuel pump problem, extra 7k i have to shelf out and worst of all another 3 months of waiting. But at the end i still choose the 335i and here im waiting for mine. 328 xi was my consideration too coz i live in toronto where the winter is not too forgiving, but for the amount you add compare to all the stuff you get out of a 335 is well worth it, i would definitly shoot for the 335xi if you can afford the wait. Anyways you have time to decide until you get your production number so have fun researching ( I think one of the beemer magazine had a 328 to 335 comparison article and that was really convincing ) |

I would not worry about the fuel pump issue. My 335i has 14k miles on it and no problems. I was at my dealer a month ago and asked one of the service guys how many cars they had in with fuel pump issues and he said he has only heard of one. Ed

I am curious on one thing.. what kind of options on 328xi vs 335 are you putting thats making the difference only $800. I wanted the same options on a 335 vs 328i and the price difference was over $6K and for 328xi I would imagine it would be about $4K.

I pretty much loaded the 328xi coupe - pp, sp, step, ipod, logic7, cw (jet black) and it came out to 45K even. I think I just added pp, ipod, and step to the 335i (jet black and did not add sp) and it came out to 45.8K.
Not really an apples to apples load on the options, but I thought opting out of the sports package for the 335i coupe would provide me with a little better all year round driving capability. I didn't realize logic7 is already included in the 335i, so the difference in base price is narrower by $1,200. |

Was in the same EXACT situation. I ordered a 328xi coupe in April for second half of July delivery, and ended up changing my order like midish June for a 335i. 2 months of waiting all gone in the trash because I later found out that the 335 is just $2000 more than the 328xi w/ better transmission and all. And just the fact that I'm going to be driving a 335 and not a 328 simply makes me feel better Ohya I also think the dual exhausts loook a lot more sexier :rocks: Now its about the waiting.................. |
