Can a used TCU be re-coded?

I am purchasing a used TCU to retrofit my e90, does anyone foresee an issue here?

Thanks!

You'll probably have to change the VIN. Most modules record the VIN or the last 7 digits of the VIN internally. It may function OK or may just throw a silent code with the wrong VIN and still work fine (some modules do, others, like ABS don't). The dealer can do this by running the "replacement" option in their software. It's possible to do this yourself with a cable and some of the leaked software floating around, but it's not trivial and the program used (Toolset32) is not very intuitive and can do damage to your electronics.
