Thinking of driving my car to Vegas this weekend.
So I am picking up my car on Friday and thinking about driving it to Vegas that night from Los Angeles. Is this a good or bad idea. What is a good way for me to drive there if its alright. I want to break it in nicely.. I figured slowing down and speeding up every here and there would be the right way?

Two main problems I see... 1) Fuel pump (don't want to be stuck in the desert ) 2) You need to vary your rpms and speed quite a bit imo during break in. If you dont see those as concerns, go ahead and take the trip. |

Go for it, what better way to christen your new car.
Besides with LA-Vegas Friday traffic on I-15, you're going be varying your speed more than you'd like.

I think you're nuts because:
1. Fuel pump issue - the desert gets over 100 degrees 2. May not be the best way to break in the car 3. It is almost impossible to avoid rock chips on the road to Vegas |

Fuel pumps, oil coolers...jeez, haven't you been reading the millions of 335i owners that have these problems on a daily basis??? How could you even consider driving to the grocery store....more than that, why did you buy one???? Hopefully, you didn't get the idrive, i've been hearing that the nav is sending people in the opposite direction!!! The way you break in your car, drive around your block about 3000 times....hopefully you can speed up and slow down but more importantly...you're safely near you home!
Have fun in vegas!!!

The responses to this thread are crazy. To be apprehensive about driving a BRAND NEW CAR on a little roadtrip because you're afraid it will break down?! WOW! The only valid concern is that you have to vary your engine RPMs during break-in. Other than that, drive the car, enjoy it. |

I've done that trip via I15 a couple of times. It's a bit boring through the desert but my advice is to ignore to doom sayers and go and enjoy your wheels. What was the point in buying it otherwise.
I'm driving my e93 to Italy next month which is 1200 miles each way and my pump has already been replaced. If it breaks down again I'll have an in depth conversation with BMW GB when I get back. Miopyk |

The fuel pump should not ruin your plans, but it is a cautionary tale.
Here is what happened to me: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...ght=long+story

Make sure you keep an eye out overhead for cop plane, they run speed traps on sunny days with measured mile stripes on pavment and police on the side of the road PAST where the stripes are, giving tickets. If you see the cops it's TOO LATE> so check for plane. See it ---slow down. Came thur 2 weeks ago and roads are almost all repaved ad reopened, it was like mini autoban 80 was barely keeping up, 85 was average, Just my 2cents Cheap

Back to the OP, probably it's ok.....the rpms need to be varied, but I was told just change your speed every 10 minutes, go 70, then 80, then 135, then 65, keep the motor guessing! j/k vary the speed every 10 min., but if you can't, go from 6th to 5th. I'd seriously keep it under 80 during break-in, that's just me. Prolly 100 is even ok, but not for an extended period. Fuel pump etc., that's Roadside or BMW Assist. Happy motoring! |

Ya I might not be going... Some plans are falling through and it would basically be me driving out there solo with the plans on hanging out with a few out there. I think I will just stay local and drive circles... Starting from the 101, to the 23, to the 118, to the 405 and back to the 101. Do a few laps... around the San Fernando Valley.... Endurance racing..... Probably just go to Erotica convention and get an eye full.

I can careless about the fuel pump issue even though it's quite common...however if I pay $45-50,000 for a car, it will surely be driven.
If I were the OP, I'd take it..no questions at all. Depending on what roads you take, you should be able to vary the speed and RPM. I'm in the San Fernando Valley as well, and my mother takes her car to Vegas at least 4 times a month. She takes the 210 to something something..she has 3-4 routes to avoid traffic, lol. I can say that if you do go, bring a camera with you! Some of those desert spots make beautiful backdrops. |

if you're going to not take a road trip in a new car in fear that it will break down...why did you get the car in the first place. go for it. it is highly unlikely anything will happen, and if something does happen, its just shitty luck

I wouldn't do that drive during break in. Long parts of the drive are just straight stretches of road - boring and not so easy to vary RPMs. Also, you'll be tempted to drive faster than suggested for break in. Tons of sand and high winds, too.
A little over a month ago I thought of taking my new car to Vegas from LA. The car didn't arrive in time, so I took my other car. I was very glad I did. A great LA break in drive, though, is to go to SF via the PCH. Basically the whole drive from north of Santa Barbara is good, but the section from San Luis Obispo to Monterey (i.e., Big Sur) is incredible.
