Installed my VAC OS Giken Diff Today!! Pics
Awsome day around here today. Installed my diff which came in yesterday. Car has been on stands for a few weeks. Install went great. filled the diff with OS Giken 80-250 gear oil. Man is that stuff thick and smelly. I'm also glad I did the VAC diff cover. I did the "short" street version. So far I've only driven the car around the neighborhood. Will take it out tonight and take it easy during the diff break-in period. Plan on changing the oil at 1k miles. I also paint marked all bolts after torquing them to spec so I can do a easy visual inspection at 1k miles also.

I bought the diff & 3 bottles of oil from a member on here new in the box for a good price, had them shipped to VAC. Shipped my Diff to VAC they put it all together and sent it back to me. I want to say it came out for a grand total of about $4k. I need to send the crate back and get my $50 core back so I'll update a to the penny total in a few days. This OS Giken is the one with the grooves for the oil. So it's the pricey-er unit.
Tomorrow's project will be to straighten the HKS mid plate. didn't notice it was off until the pics. Will have that leveled out in a jiffy.

OS Giken = awesome. LMK how it treats you Nice move on marking the bolts too.
We keep OSG in stock at all times. Its the step up for those who need more than what a Quaife can deliver!

Thanks Mike. I put 50 miles on it today. started off real slow around the neighborhood, then on some surface streets and at the end of the night did about 3 miles on the hwy at 70-80. No whine or noises. I can deffinately tell in a corner when you gas it a bit you have a LSD. How much backlash do the BMW diffs call for? That was the only thing I was surprised about how much slack there was. When I built Toyotas it was a tight deal, like .06" backlash. Judging from feeling the pinion rotation it's about double that?

Not sure, I have to check with my machinist. I know the OS Giken specs freaked him out a bit, but everyone seems to be thrilled with the OS Giken diffs that we have built so far. Please LMK if you feel anything odd!
Mike (with a multiplate TRD equipped Supra)

For a welded diff the Super Lock is ~$3k before core charge. In comparison, a Quaife is ~2600 before core. Welded TCD is ~$3700 before core. Superlock Info: http://store.vacmotorsports.com/os-g...e93-p2734.aspx TCD Info: http://store.vacmotorsports.com/os-g...e93-p2740.aspx

Everything is cool. Only thing I noticed is the play in the backlash is more than I've seen in diffs. Not sure if that's a BMW spec or OS Giken spec. I've only built Toyota trucks & Supras and 1/2 Ton Chevy Straight axles. All with about the same backlash spec of .06". .10" MAX. If your machinist was 100% sure he was using Giken specs then OK. Could you post the OS Giken specs just so I know? B/c I can't find them online.

No torsen. Clutch discs.
Backlash is fine, the driveline slack is due to the Giken being a Clutch unit. Everything is fine. Plan on doing 1,000 miles of easy driving on it and not much hwy for extended periods of time. Dump oil and re-fill with Giken oil. VAC- Come up with a magnetic drain plug for your cover. I'll be the first to get one. I think that would be a good option. I like to run magnetic plugs in everything.

Thanks Tibra. And yes, the crate weighed in @ 105 #'s. Not light. Breaking the diff and brakes in at the same time... it will be a few weeks before I really do a good burn out and see two strips of rubber.

200 mile update. everything is spot on. no leaks, no noises, car drives perfect. I checked the oil and it's clean as a whistle. See how it does under a burn out around 1k miles after I change the oil. But so far it's perfect. Hat off to VAC.
