Hot Side Charge Pipe...what is this and why is it leaking!! PICS

UPDATE!
Hey guys I need a little help figuring out why this is here and why not just go with the OEM pipe? This is the only thing aftermarket on this whole car that was supposed to be 100% OEM. I believe this is the reason im getting a Half Engine Light when i get on it in third gear. I really need to know where to get one at! Sorry If this is in the wrong section. Just looking for some answers.

ps...there are 4 clamps on an 8 inch pipe.

Garage List
2007 BMW 335i  [0.00]
If the intercooler is stock, which it looks like it is, then the silver pipe from the turbo should fit together with the intercooler end tank. Once they are put together a clip holds them in place.

It looks like someone was having issues with this connection and decided to use a silicone coupler and 4 t-bolt clamps to hold them together. I would take it off and look at the stock fittings beneath and see if they are in good condition.

Otherwise the car may have had an aftermarket intercooler at one point and the previous owner had to connect it this way due to modifications made earlier.

I hope this helps

Well that looks horrible. Whoever put this car back to stock did a terrible job.

It looks like someone is trying to use a coupler on the stock intercooler system. This is definitely going to cause a boost leak and CEL's. Bring it to your closest respectable shop/dealer immediately and don't go WOT until it's repaired correctly.

Ok! So i just ended up pulling the entire pipe out and the previous owner did the biggest hackjob ever getting this thing together. Im so pissed because this was sold as a "completely OEM" vehicle... the OEM pipe was for some reason cut short...and a piece of exhaust pipe was T-Clamped to the OEM pipe...and then rigged to the OEM intercooler. Im in awe how this has not given me any other problems other than the half engine light luckly. While off i checked the Turbo wheels for play and feel brand new!!! )) ill post pics tonight of thew hackjob. Im extremely disappointed. So now my question is does anyone have a connection at a BMW dealer to help me fix this correctly because i looked up the part last night and its around 350 for just the pipe :/ Let me know if anyone has a place that can do better. Thanks Again everyone!

BTW...Removal of the Cats and pipe only took around an hour and a half!

Just buy an aftermarket FMIC. I think you can just take off all those clamps and couplers and attached an aftermarket FMIC with the couplers that come with it.

Helix and ETS are popular.

I did... From this site!!! The worst thing about this is before i was a member i was just browsing the classified section and saw his post. His phone number was listed so i just went that route instead of pm'ing him. No sense making a huge deal out of it now (bought the car little over a year ago) but i never did my forum research. i was a newb to 3 series and came from a subaru where hackjobs are common...lol

I would love to do an aftermarket FMIC but i wanna keep it OEM but tasteful. Any ideas where to get a replacement part that wont bend me over in price?

Sorry to here what happened bro, but you could call thwe wracking yards for one.

Most the time they do not have an idea on how much some of those OEM cost.

For example I need a rear diff for my Wavetac LSD and it need to be a bolted gear ring, and they yard I found one at had one for about 3 yrs and it still looked new with only 1500 miles on it, so I cut a deal on it for $350 and I never looked back, in other yards that know what they have it runs close to $800 or more.

So try this link:

http://www.car-part.com/ and do a search for your part, I am sure you can get it for less then $100.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned all the oil everywhere. You should probably get an oil catch can.

Looks like previous owner had one of the intercooler setups that requires you to cut the pipe, then he cobbled it back together (probably after he saw how much the oem pipe costs to replace!).

At least it is relatively easy to fix, get the correct pipe and will go back together pretty quick, the more concerning thing is the huge amount of oil leaking out of there, usually it collects int he intercooler, I would take the intercooler completely out and see how much oil is in it - guessing it is a lot if the joint looks like that.

I did! And i think the oil is present on the coupler because of horrible install. I was throwing the half engine light and when i had my car at the dealer getting the HPFP replaced they ran the codes and said that there was an air leak where that hackjob pipe was at. so thats why it collected there...im assuming. I did look in the intercooler and there wasnt a sig. ammount so i think im doing ok. But yes a catch-can would be a great idea.
