Torque wrench for our cars

COBB uses a nice torque wrench in the video to install spark plugs. Anyone know a place to get a nice digital one for a good price.

This is the one I believe I saw in the video but in gray (Torque Wrench, Electronic, $469.95)

Those are the ones I use. The grey wrenches do angle torque, which is only required for certain fasteners in the engine and suspension. You will need a 3/8" 10-100lb-ft non-angle torque wrench for most all work you will do. Some suspension bolts are 100Nm + 90 degrees, which requires the 20-250lb-ft 1/2" drive. Rod bolts, all of the aluminum bolts, and head bolts are angle torque, so if you're going to do any of those jobs on your own, the 3/8" and 1/2" angle torque wrenches are the ones to have. Just pricey.

They also read inch-pounds and Newton-meters.

If you have money to burn, they also make a 1/4" angle torque wrench, which is handy for the smallest aluminum bolts and internal engine bolts. It's good from about 4 up to 20lb-ft.

Find someone who is in a mechanics school, they usually get 50% off retail (which is cheaper then what the drivers pay for the tools in the truck sometimes).

Not electronic but this is what I bought instead. Works like a charm. I changed my plugs last Sunday with these.

I got a Hazet 5121-1 torque wrench for like 80EUR which works between 20-120Nm, so it covers both the spark plugs (24Nm) and wheels (120Nm). It's great !

Go get a Snap On (electronic) and have it calibrated...$250. I just use the cheaper Craftsman as it gets the job done for what I use it for.

@JamesM3M5 I'm looking at a new Snap-On one on eBay for around $220.
--Alarm Settings: 10-100 Ft/Lbs, 60-1200 In/Lbs, 6.8-135 N-m
--Guarantee range: 10.-99.5 Ft/Lbs, 120-1195 In/Lbs, 13.5-135N-m

@Jeff@topgearsolutions Unfortunate the only friend I know graduated years ago and is not a mechanic no more

@marv85 I have one of those I picked up at home depot for $60. Looking for a digital one

@ tscdennab Hazet are expensive

@Syndicategt That's a 1/4 wrench. Don't we need a 3/8 wrench for plugs and wheels?

What you guys think about AC Delco? Is it a good brand and just as good as Snap-On for a good digital torque wrench?

AC Delco is a decent brand. However Snap-on/Blue Point is far superior and (IMHO) about the best you can get. At work I have a 3/8 drive, (3) 1/2 drive and 3/4 drive Snap-On torque wrenches and they are amazing quality.

I would love to own those three for a decent price. My thing is I would like ppl here guide me (us) to a good place where we can get a good price for a snap-on tools like those. Also, if anyone recommends any mechanic that can get some discounts.

Can you also break down what each size covers in our cars. I'm out of warranty so I'm doing a lot of DIY lately and need to get the proper tools for this car.

I don't know of anything on our cars that would require anything bigger than a 1/2 drive wrench, but I'm sure jamesM3 could confirm/deny that(The only thing I use my 3/4 drive is BIG torque stuff 300-600ftlbs.) Like jeff said, if you can find someone that is a "student" then that's the cheapest you can get it. If you find a vendor selling Snap-On stuff at CHEAP prices then it's probably too good to be true.

Had problems with Craftsman torque wrenches in the past. I went with CDI this time around and love them.

Spark plugs are not that complicated. I hand tightened mine using common sense. Don't try to be a Rambo with the wrench...
