Wavetrac LSD installed

Here is the install my bro did for me this weekend while i'm in the philippines on vacation. I've had this damn diff sitting in my garage for like 3-4 months and finally getting it put in.

pumpkin opened with old diff

old diff out

old diff next to the wavetrac lsd

ring gear removed

ring gear installed

new diff installed

So i don't get back into town to drive the car till next weekend but i will let you guys know how it is and what i think of the new lsd

Is this just a straight swap or do you have to gauge it?

did he measure backlash and tension?
i'm shopping around for a shop to do this, but i kindda want to do it myself if there's no difference in shimmy or anything.

Exactly. It would be a pretty simple install that most of us could do if it were as easy as just swapping parts. Most of us lack when it comes to measuring backlash and setting everything. I wouldn't trust myself w/o someone experienced looking over my shoulder. Your brother has skills. You are going to enjoy this highly!

It shouldn't be too difficult to set the backlash. Set a dial indicator on the ring gear and move it back and forth. Then based on the measured amount of backlash you would shim the ring gear if im not mistaken to minimize the backlash between the ring and pinion.

yeah my bro is a technician at calgary bmw. so basically when ever i need any work done i just bring the car to him. anyways the only info you will for the diff install is:

This is information i got directly from their install technician. Took awhile for my bro to get the specs from BMW cause they didn't have it in their system but he finally got them and he said they were the same.

BMW stuff he ordered for the car was side shaft seals, new driveshaft nut, sealant for the rear cover and of course new fluid.

said it took him an hour and a half to pull the diff out (friday after work) and then pretty much all of saturday to swap and put everything back together.

and this is his quote on www.n54tech.com
"Install was fairly simple, other than getting one of the bearing races off the old diff, backlash was within spec after the install. Test drove vehicle after the install, diff's perfectly quiet and doesn't make any noise and does nice burnouts now "

thanks to my bro for the install, mike@n54tuning.com for all my parts, and Autotech Driveline for all the info my bro needed. They basically told me if my bro needed any help on info while doing the install to call them and they would try to help as best they could. Great service
