How many miles on the car, and have you replaced any transmission fluids?

does this only happen when you first start the car on cold mornings and such? or does it still happen when the car is warm and you've been driving for >15 min?

Read Mr. 5's second post in this DYI. Pretty sure he his describing the same issue. BMW says that transmission fluid is a lifetime fluid. I disagree. I would definitely change the fluid.

That does not sound normal to me. My transmission feels more 'notchy' until I drive around for a bit but nothing even close to forcing it ...

its not a HUGE force....this is something thats really hard to explain. its almost notchy i guess and it just NOT smooth at all in the first 3 gears. but if i go 1st....then back to N then the 2nd time i go to 1st its COMPLETELY smooth the 2nd time i go into the same gear from N..... so odd!!!!

The way you describe it, it almost sounds like the synchronizers aren't doing their job. Perhaps they are worn. IDK.

Gears 1-6 all feel about the same to me going in. If your first few gears feel noticeably different than 5-6 then that's an area of concern.

See if you can test drive another MT BMW and how it feels?

I see you're in NJ .... there is a meet coming up this weekend, you could go to that and get a second opinion from someone:
