Need help to understand why USB Audio option in 335i is only Factory installable?

Hi,

This is my first posting and I am sorry to say that I am only slightly unhappy first time owner of a new 335i Cabriolet 2007. I have to say I am happy with this first time purchase however I am confused. If BMW is such a great auto engineering company then can anyone out there explain the following? I ordered the car on Feb 22nd in the hope of May delivery. When we ordered the car we did not get the 6 CD changer but we did order the sports package, conveyance package and navigation (So we have I Drive). There was no option for the USB Audio on the order sheet in February. The car gets built in the beginning of May great:-)! However I am told that the USB option is not installed (Was not on the order sheet) and it is only factory installable:-( (Can you believe BMW does not trust its field technicians to install this option?!). So can you believe and over 82,000 CDN TAXES included car missing a $350 option which cannot get corrected in the field. I still cannot believe this and I would like to complain to the president of BMW World Wide (If I only had his mail address)! So in conclusion for a stupid $350 Canadian option (To connect my IPOD) I have had a very bad experience with my first purchase of my BMW and my only option to correct this problem is to order a new car! So my question is how do I get BMW to correct this badly marketed / designed / engineered problem? Thank you for any help you can bring!

Signed not very happy 335i Cab 2007 owner!
Cheers,

While I would like to have this option as well, I think the cost of installing it in the field, if they would even do it, would be quite a bit more than $350 as a good bit of the car would have to be disassembled in order to make it happen, and you might end up with a few bonus rattles in the process. I plan on getting the glovebox iPod adapter installed.

1) You obviously didn't do your own research. The 6FL USB/iPod adapter was available starting with March builds. It was noted on all of the BMW price lists posted here. You could have added it up to about a week before production.

2) There is a dealer installable iPod adapter. It is missing some of the functionality of the 6FL adapter, but it works with the steering wheel controls.

Thank you johnc 22. Could you let me know where I could find the info on the glovebox iPod adapter and is it a BMW component?

If you happen to have the BMW CEO email address , please PM to me. I am gonna raise a compliant too. I found local dealer here has been hiding a lot of orderable options from customers. e.g. electric sunblind was not on the list when I ordered my model 2006 E90 330i in 2005 Oct, not to say USB and stuff like that.

It cant easily/cheaply be retrofitted because there are a number of new/changed control units, wiring and plugs for it

Any BMW dealer parts dept. will have it, or can order it. Service dept. can install for you.
