Sunglasses Tray - 2011

My wife just got a 2011 335i that came with a nice sunglasses tray. I looked it up from realoem and got it replaced my ash tray. Part no. 51169198283, $22.93 from getbmwparts.com. As you can see, it nicely fit my Oakley M-Frame with plenty of space.

2010 DCT version

1. Get a set of trim tool
2. Remove the shift boot
3. Disconnect shift knob wire
4. Remove shift knob
5. Pull the center console cover out with trim tool (don't really need to disconnect the iDrive wires)
6. Disconnect the lighter wire
7. Remove 4 torx screws
8. Remove the ashtray and install the sunglasses tray
9. Re-install everything

I like it, but don't think I would want to lose the electrical plug.

You have another one in your center console.

It's not big enough to hold most sunglasses and close it. It would be good for keys or something, but what's the point in that. I ordered the closing one by mistake when the original part # posted was wrong and believe me you probably wouldn't want to go that route. If you are looking to get rid of the ashtray for a sunglass holder the open air no lid one like in the picture is the best option.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but how did you remove the DCT gear selector? Do you just pull on it like the 328/335 AT?

I've been thinking of doing this switch as well, miss the sunglass tray on my 335i.

Pull the leather boot from the front of it back. Disconnect the wire harness. Then pull up firmly till it pops out. Be careful not to punch yourself.

I did the covered lid one myself. Not all glasses will fit, but it looks much cleaner with the lid.

I've seen a euro sunglass holder that attaches to the the roof near where the "oh shit handles" typically are. That solution looks big enough for most all glasses.

Also, if you add some wire, you can relocate the cig lighter to the secret power port/cig lighter pre made hold under the glove compartment near the center console. That way your passenger can still use it to charge a phone.

For those of you guys with the covered lid, could you snap a pic or two? I haven't been able to find any pics... just curious as to how small it actually is with the lid.
