idle engine noise?
i started up my 08 335i and drove it around i got back and pulled into the garage and when it was in park just idling before i turned it off i heard a sound from the engine bay. so i let it keep idling and i open the hood and it was making i guess like a ticking noise right by where my aftermarket BMS intake is. i revved the engine a little and the noise went away and didnt seem to come back for the few seconds that i left the engine on. is this a normal noise for either warming up or cooling down of the engine? again i know our engine make a lot of ticking noises on idle especially when cold but this was exactly where the intake is. it wasnt actually coming from the intake itself but something very close.

Mine started this a few months back, I had the HPFP replace as I was getting long cranks and some plausibility codes so i thought it might be the pump. Still does it after the replacement...don't know what it's all about either. I don't have any performance issues but I'd like to know what it is.

mine was making ticking noises 30 sec after starting up the car for a good minute and goes away...sounds like it was coming from the driverside. I recently took her in and they told me it was the rocker arms making the noise. U might want to get it checked out.

I have an issue on my forge diverter valves where one of the hoses is a couple mm too long and if certain conditions happen the actual diverter valves will touch and make a ticking sound. It can be mistaken for the DP's touching, but if I straighten up the hoses it goes away. Does not happen often, and I just need the time to get in there and shorten one of the hoses by a couple mm's.

Read through this post and listen to the video. It may be just a noisy evap valve. Mine did once and I haven't heard it again.

If you rev it an it goes away for a sec then comes back its your tank vent valve. It's located under the intake manifold cyl. 6 runner. It's hung by a rubber thing that fits on a bracket attached to the manifold.
It's nothing to worry about I see a lot of cars that make that noise. And new ones really aren't that much quieter. |

I think I have found the cause of this strange ticking noise!
I got the exact same noise as the OP's video showed, and as someone said earlier in this thread, the noise is coming from the evap control valve. I also found that some people have had some problem with this valve and got a fault code (P2418). Shiv wrote in an old thread about this code and suspected a loose gas cap. And thats when I realized that my lovely wife was refueling the car and had some problems with tighting the cap a couple of days ago (first time ever she refueled this car )... ...and after I tighten the cap (which was a little loose) the sound is totally gone! someone wrote that in that other thread. is this true? |

On the E46's, they used to offset the evap valve with a rubber grommet to avoid imparting ticks onto the body, amplifying the sound. I wonder if its that easy here? I cant find the valve on realoem IPB. Can someone point to it?

I have no idea to tell you the truth. Mine ticks in the morning but goes away once warmed up. The sound from the video is WAY louder than my tick though and more distinguished. Now about the gas cap thing, I dont know if that would have much to do with the actual tick itself but im not a professional mechanic so I wouldnt know if not tightening the gas cap correctly could produce this loud tick noise.
