After the warranties...
So my 06 330Xi CPO is up against it's warranty time limit next month, with only 60k miles on the clock. BMW does not offer anything beyond the CPO as an extension AFAIK.
Are there any insurance companies or reputable warranty companies that are worth their salt? I know that 99% of the "used-car-lot-warranty-companies" are pretty shady at best. I am looking for something solid, no BS, that can get me out to 100k miles or beyond. I want coverage for the big stuff; engine, trans, diff, and the bell and whistle electronics...must cover authentic BMW parts repairs. I like this car, and it's in perfect shape, I want to keep it as long I can with peace of mind. I realize the cost/benefit ratio of a policy may or may not pay off, but I can do the math if I find a good warranty provider.

Check out Ford ESP Care, I believe you can get coverage up to 125k but check the year limitations:
http://www.fordespwarranty.com/ I had a thread going a while back re: aftermarket warranties; I ended up going with the BMW extended warranty to 100k because I was still under factory and it wasn't an issue. Here is my original thread with a quick matrix of what the different levels offer http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=490334 Hope this is of use to you both

Put the money you would have spent on an extended warranty into an interest earning account. Use that account to pay for things that the warranty would have covered. Chances are better than excellent that you will come out ahead.
Warranty companies are not charities, they are in the business to make money, and the profit margins are obscene on those things. The dealership typically gets 1/2 the price! Extended warranties are like gambling in Vegas, the house ALWAYS wins. BTW - LOVE those Datsun Zs!

I have a 330i and I self insure. Dealing with aftermarket warranty companies is such a pain that I refuse to ever do it again. If you can afford $3-4k up front for a warranty, you can afford the risk of owning a 6 year old 330i. Statistically you will spend less than $3-4k on repairs over the next few years.

That's about what I've heard about 3rd party warranties. A lot of finger pointing between the dealer and the company, and ultimately you as the car owner end up holding the bag. I've had good luck with manufacturer's extended warranties. My concern with the BMW is the electronics and particularly the software.

I would say its all in your mind, train your mind to be ready for any repair.
If you are mentally prepared to put in some money as maintenance, you should be fine. Just consider that fact that if you want a new car now you will have to shell out $20-30k more !! |

I spent $2500-ish for an "extended warranty" for my 1989 325is (E30). I got a new thermostat and radiator out of it and nothing else. In retrospect, I wish I had put that money in the bank because I could have pocketed about $2,000 in the end.
Once my manufacturer's warranty expires on this car, I'll either trade in for new or put $3,500 into the bank and use it for repairs.

Invest in a good set of tools and a Bentley service manual. Seriously, with resources like Tischer for parts and this forum for DIY advice, you can tackle most maintenance and repair issues.

i would bank the money. i looked into it on my 07 when i was close to 50k but i couldnt spend 3k on a what if. when i needed new brakes i went to a german car place. minor stuff i would just look on youtube and call tisher. however (knock on wood) if something big does go out i can afford to get it fixed or the car replaced.
