CF roof for M Coupe
Anyone out there know of any current or planned CF roofs for the M Coupe...it would be cool to drop another couple hundred pounds or so.

i think CF roof is something M cars will get standard starting with the new M3. i'd be very surprised if they put it on current models. just like twin-turbo is probably never going to make its way to regular Z4s.

Don't most aftermarket CF roofs just install over the tin top?
If you want to loose weight.... talk to TC Kline about the carbon coupe

a guy on baybimmerz has a nice pictorial of the removal of his normal roof and the installation of a cf roof. Can't remember what it was, certainly wasn't a Z4.

A few mates and I have been talking about doing this on my Coupe, although it won't be at least until next year. It's too new yet to go chopping it up
But it looks like a very easy job to remove the current roof, and I have plenty of contacts for doing the carbon-work and making a replacement panel.

you can't just cut the roof out dude, it's structural
and just adding carbon over the top is really weak! I wouldn't even consider doing something so drastic as removing the roof panel on such a new/expensive car |

Well, we need to get the headlining off yet to have a proper look, but the gut feeling is that the roof isn't structural. From having a brief look at mine, we reckon that it just a tack-welded/bonded panel. Don't forget the Z4MC is just a Z4M Roadster with a fixed roof. They built the fixed roof onto the already structurally-sound Z4MR design. All the strengthening is already in the Roadster design. The Z4MC is stiffer, but that comes from the main structures around the roof (ie the C pillars and any crossmembers under the roof-panel).

I don't think the panel is structural either. I'm sure the roof is pretty similar to the M3 roof in the DIY 'cept smaller. I think the CF would definatly help drop the weight of the steel and lower the the COG tho. I doubt it'll happen on mine any time soon tho. She's still too perty to be cuttin open

Dammmittt.. you too eh? I figured it would be worth giving them a shout, since it would be a lot easier to buy a ready-done roof, than take mine off then try and get someone to copy it (and turn the car into a roadster in the mean time )...
So yes - I'm waiting on a shipping quote to the UK, but I expect I'll take TC Kline's offering as it will reduce this to a days work. Oh, and I had a bit of a closer look on the car, and had a bit of a more in-depth chat with the chaps at TCK, and they confirmed my thoughts - the roof is actually just bolted and glued/bonded on! I thought there might be some tack/spot welds, but not even that. Don't know if anyone else has noticed how our cars are like big Meccano kits. Everything is bolt on, even the rear wings/quarters.... Will certainly make a roof swap a hell of a lot easier though! Watch this space

Incidentally, they also sell the hood (but without the "M" darts/creases) and the trunk/boot lid in carbon fibre, and they are direct replacements for the originals. Obviously they sell the whole car in carbon, but the other parts (wings, doors etc) are wider and so will alter the look of the car....
Shame about the hood, but that trunk lid must weigh a bit .... (although I guess half of that is the glass rear screen anyway!)

Yeah...that sux about the hood (or should I say bonnet?). But I think the roof would look really nice and I'm not too sure I'd want to do too much cutting. I'm glad it sounds pretty simple to do. Not that I'd try it myself

What kinda weight savings would you see with the TC Kline CF roof?

I think the estimate is 60lbs, but its very significant because it is high in the car's center of gravity. As far as handling impact, that ranks up there with removing unsprung weight.

The CF roof panel weighs 7.9 lbs. Not sure what the stock roof weighs..but I'm guessing that since it weighs more than the roadie...it's alot.
