??? is the 325 engine a 2.5L or 3.0L?

I'm confused. There is different information if the 325 engine is a true 2.5 litre engine or 3.0. Anyone know??

They are both 3 litre engines. The 325 is a basic version of a fine engine. The 330 has a sophisticated air induction system and other enhancements to make it a great engine.

I would have thought 325 has 2497 cc engine and 330 has 2996 engine size.

You are both right. In Europe 325 will be 2.5L, in USA it will be 3.0L.

I don't get it. Why does Europe get the 2500cc 325 and US gets the 3000cc 325? Also, if that's the case then how are the hp figures the same for both?

It may have something to do with future US emissions requirements or it is just a cost effective approach.

Reminds me of the e36 m3 which had a different stronger engine in europe. But this time the US gets stronger version. Mebbe BMW trying to make up for the past??

Doesn't Europe have a per liter/cc tax? And isn't some country's insurance rates also basd on liter/cc? If taht'st the case then having an engine that's actually smaller displacement would help keep costs down.

Yea but wait until you see the power curves, I bet you'll see they're different.

I dont' think there's much doubt that the USDM 325i engine will be 3.0L. 525i owners already confirmed that their engines at 3.0.

Actuallly, I am pretty sure that the 5 series still uses the OLD 3.0 and 2.5 liter engines, found in the E46 3 series. Hence the 525i's engine IS a 2.5 liter. Where did you hear otherwise?

Take a look at the March official BMW press release. It says in it that the US spec engine is 3.0 and the European spec engine is 2.5.

Like pharding said already, the 3 stage induction in the 330 gives it more power from the same basic engine.

the 325 has 215 hp and the 330 has 255 hp...they are both 2996 cc's..And yes the UK's insurance rates are very dependant on engine size..hence the popularity of the "1" series over here..These things are flying off the shelf...And so are the E90's by the way..I almost crashed my E46 by staring at one at a stop light the other day..However, the UK models are still offering cloth as a standard!!

Its funny to see the questions and obsessions revisited. People say that there is no way a 335i will exist, or that BMW want do a turbo charger. But, no-one really knows. You go back to the beginning and take a look at the old stuff.

USA and Europe measure horsepower differently

Euro horses are smaller, so need more to deliver the same performance

in the USA it is a 3 liter but in europe and most other places in the world it is a 2.5 liter , for many reasons
1. gas is far cheaper in the USA than most countries in the world
2. insurance is based on the engine cc in europe
3. road tax is based on the engine cc in europe
4. the US version is detuned
5. the US version has higher carbon emmisions and in the future carbon emmisions in europe will be taxed
