garage door opener

I believe reading in the manual that the integrated garage door opener works when the car is off, although, I'm not finding that to be the case.

I was able to program it perfectly and it works great when the car is on, but not when it's off or even in radio mode. I also looked to see if the LED lights up when the car is off, but it does not which leads me to believe that it is not getting power when the car is off.

Anybody else have this happen to them?

Thanks.

I like the fact that it does not work while the car is off... keeps theives from braking your car window if you park outside, and then having full access to open your garage... There was a lot of this going around for a while...

Sorry, don't have the homelink feature but I have also noticed that when the ignition is off, the brake lights don't illuminate either.

I can't get the homelink bit to work with my garage door. I can get my own door openers to work, but not the bmw homelink on the visor.

dunno...tried everything the manual said to do, both random code and fixed...nothin. Oh well.

First you need to reset the button from the garage unit then program the remote and last step is pair it with homelink on your car that would solve the problem. Many of the new garage opener has the rolling code and it take a bit extra time to get it set up.

Yeah I tried that. I hit the program button the garage unit and ...none of the door openers would work so i had to reprogram them all - while in doing so I also tried the homelink button - no go. /sigh

no worries, not all that important - i'll be moving in a couple months, i'll try it again with the new place.

Took me 30 seconds to program mine. This time. But that's because I had my '06's as practice. First time took me a couple of days and some phone calls.

You probably have a rolling code opener, so try these steps:

1. Clear the system by pressing buttons 1 and 3 until you think your fingers are going to fall off, or until you get the flashing tiny red light that you can barely see.

2. Set your handheld opener to the system by pressing the desired Homelink button and the handheld opener at the same time, also for several seconds until you see the fast blinking. HERE'S THE TRICK - hold your opener between the windshield and the mirror. These systems seem to have a really tough time in any other position.

3. On your garage door opener, press the "learn" button - and within 30 seconds, press and hold the assigned homelink button.

The real trick you won't see in the instructions is the positioning of the hand held unit when learning your code, in step 2.

Rotsa ruck!!!

Did you even read any of the previous posts? You would actually WANT people to have access to your garage?

Remember that while the garage door is the common use for Homelink, it is not the only thing you can control with it. It is a security measure, and a safety measure. Would you want your kids to be able to mess with the buttons while you're out of the car too?

BTW - in the '07's you can open and close the sunroof without the ignition or even radio ready mode. Ha ha.

Thanks man, I will give that a try. I did try holding the handheld opener near the button...but not between the mirror and the windshield.

Either I have poor reading skills (I don't) or the manual seems a bit vague in its direction as to how this is to work

The manual doesn't mention that, but it's a commonly known trick for the Homelink support folks. Works like a champ for me, every time.

Re-read my post. I just told the OP that mines doesn't work when it's off either. I didn't say that I wanted the Homelink to work when the ignition is off.

I was referring to the sunroof.

Thanks for the tip! I have tried a couple times before and gave up on programming mine. Holding the opener between window and mirror worked like a champ.

I'm not sure if I got my question answered yet? I have a e92 335i and the garage door opener is built into the rear view mirror. It opens the garage door fine when the car is on, but when I turn the car off it does not work.

I think it's programmed correctly, I think the manual may be wrong because it says I can open the garage when the car is off; although, I haven't found that to be the case.

Thanks.

Look in the manual. There is an 800 number for home-link. They are very friendly and will walk you thought the entire process. It was quite simple.

and it doesn't work when the car is off. But that's fine by me, my car seems to always be on when I'm coming home or after I pull out of the garage.

As a man the first thing I did when I saw the manual was ...burn it

Men don't need manuals.

Heh, well I know - I saw that number, but you know how it is...last resort. Sort of like hitting the on this forum. In any event I am about to go give this a shot, I expect it to work. If it does not - there will be fur flyin.

Thanks.
