Is the M Roadster reliable?
I called my local dealer yesterday to inquire on a pre-owned M Roadster. Specifically a 2006. He advised that I should purchase new because the M cars are not certified and if sometime went wrong it would be very expensive. My first thought would be a 2006 would still be under warranty and secondly....Is the M Roadster reliable or should I anticipate problems down the road. This is a car I plan to keep 10/15 years.

1. he probably didn't have a used one to sell you 2. he likely has half a dozen new ones on the lot Ask yourself... are M3s reliable? That's where most of the MZ4 major components come from.

I'm already @ 6000miles on my Zed, and the major mechanicals are in great shape. However, I've already had some electrical issues/phenomena crop up (eg. RFT sensor malfunction, map light malfunction, both of which spontaneously corrected itself). I had to have the stealer replace a faulty corner window and sideview mirror.
So the answer is it depends on the car. Some members have 0 faults, some have lemons. I expected to have more reliability issues with my Zed compared to my previous Nissan, so I'm prepared. If the dealer does have a lot of new ///Ms on the lot then you should try to lowball them for one. Wait until the end of the month when they're in a crunch for sales and I think you'll do fine. Nothing like the smell of a new car... |

Don't have many miles yet (5300 miles) but have had no problems.
Doesn't the car come with the original 4 year/50,000 mile warranty/maintenance program? That should cover you for most any problem you may have,

Couple things I noticed yesterday...the remote stopped working...about an hour later it was fine. Also, used the Aux in jack for the first time...when I unplugged damn near the entire panel almost fell out.

Our cars must have been Friday cars... people @ the plant on Fridays are thinking about the weekend and not on craftsmanship.

Interesting, didnt know the ///M cars are not being certified, I guess the fact that people tend to track these cars more i guess they receive more abuse than the non M Z4s. Yet the ///M cars are marketed that way yet BMW wont step up to the plate and certified a preowned. Very interesting |

To the OP: I think there are lemons in any brand of car you may choose to drive. It's always a gamble, especially on higher-performance, newer model cars. I trust my old 88 Silverado 100%, all of the time and never have a worry in the world with it. I'd also drive my brother's old re-built Nova muscle car anywhere with no worries. There just isn't all that 'stuff' to go wrong.
Buy what you want that you can afford and enjoy it. Because the bottom line is, you may get an outstanding car, or you may get a lemon; whether it's an Audi, Porsche, BMW...or ( fill-in-the-blank). In any case, let us know what you decide and remember: Good luck~! |

I think you need to find a new dealer. There is no way that any BMW dealer should sell any 1 year or less old BMW without a certified pre-owned warranty. I'd call BMW HQ and enquire about it more if they still refuse. Letting big brother know can't hurt on this one.
