Im trying to understand why his Lid came off. Its a very odd crash. Very surprised Rossi & Edwards didn't hang around to help him. RIP Marco.

Oh no. I cannot believe it. I am at work and just heard the tragic news.

He would have been better off having been unconscious. RIP Marco.

Pretty obvious when you watch the footage. Having two bikes in succession
running/crashing over your head

Not pretty http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=8c7_1319367662

I saw the crash live on TV, they did not say that he was that bad! Another sad day for motor sport "to fast to live, to young to die" RIP Marco

I was watching it live and knew immediately that it was serious when you see the helmet rolling away. I think it was actually Rossi's bike that took his helmet off a fraction after Edwards' bike had hit him in the back but then it fell on the helmetless Marco.
Dreadful accident. RIP Marco Simoncelli.

I have seen the accident now. Dreadful.

I think maybe Rossi's wheel severed the chin strap or may have even been the massive impact tore the strap out.

Very unfortunate. Unbelievable.

I fancy your jaw bone/neck is weaker than a chin strap. Either way its not something that could be foreseen or planned against. Two bikes braking simultaneously on your heed. The consequences are not nice.

Be Serious!

All racers are taught to get themselves off the track, and leave any clear up etc to the marshalls...............

Makes me sick watching it

Got hit head on by a stolen car in 1997.......... and my helmet came off - but that was due to me being at a mates about 1/2 mile from home and not buckling it up!! I was lucky!

RIP Marco - very reminiscent of a young Rossi

from looking at the vid.............. looks like the head impact has shattered the side of the helmet/visor pod where the strap mount is riveted through the fibreglass/kevlar shell of the helmet.......... as you can see the long length of the chin strap flapping about - needs some impact to do that!

I agree, but im sure the wheel turning at 90mph would have disintergrated the chin strap. so it failed and the helmet was ripped off his head. I have since read he had tyre marks on his neck.

Yes I also agree, and it was I said originally, Either strap torn or an impact.

Both are likely in that kind of accident.

A sad loss to the world. A proper racer, and nice guy to boot.
