After Market IN DASH NAV,DVD player advice for a non-idrive user

I was searching through ebay and found this unit: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...K%3AMEWAX%3AIT
Is it worth upgrading from a stock cd player to something like this. I currently have a prologic7 and rear pdc. As he has listed in his auction tha tit would work, is this a better solution?
Also, If I get something like this, do I still need to save my stock player?

This guy is asking the same question

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=596539

When you replace the Logic 7 system with a new head unit you have to replace
the logic 7 amp to because it uses a proprietary fiberoptic signal protocol that only
the original head unit can provide.

Also the original head unit should be mounted in parallel its covered in the above link.

its better to buy that unit from caraudio craze for support the price is about the same.

So, there is no aftermarket system that can support Logic7 without heavy mod?

Right

You pretty much have to get rid of everything but the speakers and you probably would want to upgrade some of those. Nothing works with the BMW firberoptic L7 Amp . There are a few products that convert head unit output to toslink format but I don't know of anything that will convert to the BMW format and feed the L7 Amp.

As far as I know there aren't any Head Units in the aftermarket that use
a fiberoptic interface and there doesn't seem to be a standard for it in car stereo.

Also you should still mount the old system in the car if you want the BMW
programmer to be able to update your cars software, the chimes to work,
and errors not be displayed on your dash do to the missing connection to
bmw SOS .

If you read those links you can see there are a few surprised guys who got that
dynavin unit and had this issue its the same with all aftermarket head units.

Thanks again!
It's not easy to replace the headunit in e9x.
This are findings about it (I have Eur Spec car)

The problems with removal of the MID ( it's not just a headunit).
1) You will have to replace all Amps and probably the speakers
2) You will lose the OEM bluetooth, cd changer (if you have it)
3) You will lose the PDC (sounds cames from the speakers)
4) Steering wheel buttons
5) The dealer wont be able to upgrade/diagnose the software in the car

The solutions... for Alpine Headunits
1) Use aftermarket amps and speakers(beware of size/depth and locations of the speakers)
2) Get Parrot Bluetooth Kit and the Connects2 Steering wheel adapter(CTPPAR006 or CTPPAR009)
3) Alpine Interface APF-R100BM will enable PDC sound for the rear the sensors, they don't have a solution for both rear and front sensors yet.
Connects2 have similar interface(CTRBM001), only for rear sensors also.
Dietz has an interface that uses a separated speaker they claim( i haven't test it yet) that works with both sensors although the sound tone is the same for front and rear.
4) Alpine Interface APF-S100BM, this is an CANBUS Interface with Steering wheel buttons integration , it also have Speed Pulse, Light, Reverse and Ignition signals.
5) There isn't solution yet, just keep your OEM headunit and install it when you need to upgrade/diagnose the car software.

Thanks for the detailed information.

Thanks ctuna. You saved me tons of headache in digging into the details on all the forums. I had no idea that it's more than just the head unit.

Modern Cars

Essentially have many computers that are interlinked on and interdependent network and its become I giant headache to add aftermarket stereo. Its not just the Euro Cars now its all of them.

The common thing the L7 guys are doing now is the MS-8 with and aftermarket amp and speaker upgrades.

I'm mainly looking into having a GPS system, DVD and SAT radio along with bluetooth functionality. I dont know much about retrofit that were being offered here. I heard that they are pricey but can I get them to work on my e90?

Well BMW doesn't do retrofits as far as i know

They would have to give you a whole new Dash for there retro if they
even do it.(assuming you want Nav they can add some of the other stuff
for an arm an a leg)
And any retrofit that BMW does costs and arm and a leg.
You would come in under the cost of doing that with a total
aftermarket redo and it would sound better.
Thats why a Head Unit retrofit seems the only path .
That dynavin unit delivers a lot of gizmos and functions and looks
like it belongs in the dash .( and it does it relatively cheaply)
I don't know how good the quality is and the software is kind
of retro plus I don't think it has pre outs for feeding an amp.
(no preouts is kind of lame maybe I'm wrong on that)

You have to be prepared to put up with all the stuff you have to
do to make the car right though and in the case of L7 that's quite a lot.

2 sets of outputs on the Dynavin - powered which connect through the harness, and line out for feeding an amp. Sound quality using line out into aftermarket amp is quite good.

pkirk do you have one? If you do?

How do you have it setup and whats been your experience so far?

So it has pre outs ? A full set ?
Do you use any of the amped lines to drive speakers.
Are you able to bypass the amped lines into the harness to drive your
amp . Was the harness designed to Interface with the Base System or
the Hi Fi System?

Did you relocate your OEM Head Unit?
