I did it.
I went from an '07 335i coupe to an '08 335xi sedan. Coupe was always losing traction, even in the wet, while being driven smoothly. In the snow, hopeless, even on minimal slope. I grew up in Rochester, NY, and am very smooth and careful, but absent winter tires, wasn't at all capable.
Waiting for my first snow with the xi, but already notice it is on rails in the wet, with just a gentle oversteer under full power. I like it a lot. |

I went from a 06 330i into a 08 335xi. I had winter tires on both cars - Michelin pilot alpins. The i is definitely passable in the winter, but the xi is a whole different story. It's essentially unstoppable in anything less than a foot of snow. I've been stuck more than a few times in deep snow in the i but the xi just keeps going.

the BMW purists (read oldschool) will tell you how "adequate" RWD with good snow tires are in the snow.
However, there really is no comparison between RWD and AWD in crappy conditions. If traction and safety are important to you, go with the XI. If I lived in California (- skiing trips?) or Arizona, I would go RWD...no question, but in Colorado...I'll go AWD. |

RWD is far and away the poorest format for snow/ice. The tires are a must, as even with A/S rubber, you'll be stuck on hills and have major cornering difficulty. That said, even with winter tires, I've seen plenty of RWD bimmers around my house slid off the road, or spinning tires trying to get up a hill. Do you live in a hilly area? Do you drive a lot when the weather's bad? Do you live in the burbs or city? All of these are relevant when looking at the drive wheel format. Where I'm at and given my weather, driving for work, living in a hilly area etc, AWD is a must, particularly for the driving enthusiast that still wants to enjoy the car even when the weather's bad. A distant second place would be a FWD car (figure TL). But I'd never get a 12month, daily driver RWD car up here. |

I had a 335i with winters and I have a 335i xdrive now. I do more "city" driving than "back country" driving so I had no issue with the i. It really depends on where you want to go with your car. I never got stuck anywhere or had any issues. You do have to be careful driving because the 335 has quite a bit of power but still doable. If you are going to areas that will have lots of un-plowed snow...you may want to go with an xi. However, if you are into modding, understand that suspension choices for the xi are much more limited and gas consumption is a bit higher.

would like a I but live in the northeast, so XI...all it would take is one crappy day of getting stuck in the snow with rwd to immediately regret getting a I over XI

I had a 08 335I but I wrapped it around a telephone pole in the rain. Here in NY that car sat in my garage all last winter and I drove the beater around.
Now moved into a 2010 335xi. The first thing I notice is how smooth it drives (maybe because I had a bent wheel on the other car) I haven't had it in the elements yet. Overall It still feels like a BMW, steering is precise, bit more body roll. Whatever Im more excited about 1.6-1.8 60' times at the track opposed to the 2.0-2.1 in the rwd. |

Sold the 328xi and bought an M3, even with Blizaaks, it didn't grip close to the XI. But, so much more fun. So now, we still have the M and a new 335xi
