BMW M3d coming?

Well I didn't expect this but I guess it could theoretically happen. A BMW 550dXM and maybe a BMW M5d? So next up could be a BMW M3d? So much for diesel not being as good as gas.

GET USED TO BURNING OIL! Power and efficiency.

Well, the diesel M5 seems to be confirmed for sure (http://f10.5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=573702), with the possibility of an M5 diesel wagon (not yet confirmed).

It wouldn't surprise me if they'd toss in an M3 diesel later on - and as a diesel driver, I would like to welcome it very much!

... but as another member here already pointed out, it could just as well become an M4 diesel

Yes, the BMW i8. A plug-in hybrid, and it's already on its way. 0-60mph in under 5 seconds, 78 US MPG and AWD.

Well I am glad you are sincere but even if this thing gets produced, it won't see the light of day in North America.

How could it not, theres a number of car maufactuerers that are pushing diesel, and bmw is already selling the 335d here, I think that diesel with the great torque, great MPG, and diesel costing less than premium, annddddd burning with all of the clean diesel burning technology being better for the environment i dont see why diesels shouldnt be being pushed..........

I welcome all diesels, i have a 335 xdrive and a 2009 jetta tdi wagon that has lots of torque and gets 55 mpg on the highway.......

I've said this before and I'll say it the last time, the 335d is a great car but it is getting phased out of the US market and will not be available soon. Since that is the only diesel sedan BMW currently has in the US market and it is getting phased out, what are the chances that an M3d will see the states? When people hear the M name, they generally think performance and nothing else, diesels don't equate to that. No one mass produces a hardcore diesel track car that I know of... I highly doubt BMW will (especially in the USA).

Which is exactly why you can't get iDrive, sunroofs, and powered seats on them. Oh, wait...

BMW has said that a lot of things they're doing is in direct result of the competition. I'm sure they are looking to get more M customers that have gone to Audi due to not being able to get an AWD M3 in regions with snow. And if the M3/4 came at least in xDrive, BMW would gain a good chunk of of S5 and GT-R customers.

I don't see why they wouldn't add a torque-y diesel to beat the competition in MPGs. This wouldn't take away from the RWD M3/4. And would cater to those that want the power and prestige of the M, without the need for a track car.

M- Diesel?

It has been done before, nothing new.

They will sound about the same. The appellation suggests a M-Sport variant, and certainly not a decent M-cars. Bastardization is the right description here.

People are still 335dreaming big time if they still think that diesel is coming to North Americans. The failure of the 335deadonbirth sent a notice to all new comers to *forget it *. Obsolete. No diesel for 5-series or X3 either.

BMW will invest in hybrids cars for North America before going the diesel route, which has proven to be a niche market for gadgets lovers. Limited appeal.

And not everyone had a grandpa who was a farmer.

Isn't that called a 335d? Just maybe add the x-drive option? A diesel engine automatically makes a car heavier and gives it more imprecise weight distribution... not ideal for a track car, I really don't see this going anywhere.

I don't think either of these will happen for the USA, BMW will more than likely offer smaller gas engines in the form of the turbo 4 cylinder N20.

This might prove correct. The horrible N20 kills the 35d, another horrible thing.

I dont think the 335d is being phased out at all. I think we will get more diesels, like a 320d and such. I totally understand what you are saying about M being Performance oriented however lately, BMW performance seems to have lost it's allure of lightweight high reving motors and more so based on raw power which is what a diesel would offer. Hell it would use less fuel too. Just because on one mass produces a diesel track car doesn't mean that it can't or won't be done. I welcome it.

Lol, to be honest with you, if I had to choose I would probably take the 35d if it came down just to fuel economy. A 6 cylinder engine is still a 6 cylinder engine unless the N20 proves to be a 4G63 type motor which I highly doubt.
