Reliability of an E60 m5?
Posting in this section seemed the most logical as 5post is not really populated. Iam really interested in getting into a 08-09 m5 just wondering how are they maintenance wise?
I have heard horror stories of electrical problems etc. and they seem to be common among the people i speak to. Are their any problematic areas that seem to give out or fail commonly on the e60? Does the CPO cover electrical problems or just mechanical ? For those who have owned one your input is appreciated. Thanks for all the help,Jon.

my friend has a 2005 645 and its terrible with electrics, all used bmw's are problematic.
that way i heard and from my experience is that it either very good or very bad. meaning doesnt break at all or lights up like a Christmas tree

Well my cousin also an 08 650i and the electronics were total junk, However my 08 335i never missed a blink, One of the reasons the E60 chassis is in question.

Vanos Solenoids and oil pump seems to be the noteworthy engine issues. Clutch about every 50K miles. Otherwise motor seems to be bulletproof - the early M5/M6 Euro cars are passing 100K miles now.

The last thing i will do is get a 6mt m5, Unless you talking about the DCT, witch iam sure should be covered under warranty? As long as the M5 is not known for being an electrical disaster like the older 6 series iam happy.

The only thing I've heard about the e60 M5's that could be a concern would be the clutch.
Over here we don't get the manuals so I can only speak for the smg on the early models. They are not that super expensive to replace either, perhaps 2000-2500 U$. If you buy a car that has 60 000 miles on it without having changed the clutch, I'd make sure to have that money in my wallet before buying it. |

The 6mt should be far more reliable than the smg.

Probably true, but the M5/M6 performance was compromised and neutered for 6MT. Me...I like driving with a full set of balls.

I wouldn't even think of getting an m5 in stick, You get the same feeling of 6mt with the DCT without giving up the auto mode. Its the best of both worlds and shifts faster then Jeff Gordon.

The M5/M6 uses the 7speed SMG. (a semi-automated Sequential Manual Gearbox). It has a single clutch similar to the 6MT. It is not the Dual Clutch Transmission found on the M3, Ferrari California, and F458. You might want to do some quick wiki searching to understand the differences.

In what way was the performance compromised and neutered? I"m really asking because I wasn't aware of this. (Of note, I am not antipaddle shifters, in fact I was antipaddle for a long time but recently was able to get some extensive seat time in one and came away feeling foolish about my previous prejudices).

I would suggest staying away from 06 (and I have one), 07 and early 08's. The 09 an 10 are great cars with little issues. As soon as new body stile hits the price will drop......

Well i was leaning towards an 09 or newer just for the updated idrive to be honest and of course the overall younger vehicle. What problems do you normally face in your m5 if any,has the SMG every went on you?
