Miles per tank? '11 328i
I just picked up my car 4 days ago. I've only driving 130 miles and half the tank is gone. Am I only suppose to get ~300 miles per tank?

One thing to get used to is that our tanks only hold 16 gallons of gas which is pretty small. I came from a Maxima with a 19 gallon tank so even getting 21 to 28 MPG in your bimmer will show a rapid drop on the gas Gage. I typical see 100 miles per quarter tank and I don't baby my car. 130 seems excessive translating into 13.68 MPG. Are you sure your tank was actually filled all the way from the dealer. Typically the distance to empty Gage will read 400 on a full tank when first starting my car.

Your car is brand new (assuming here). Your MPG will improve gradually with driving. |

Reset your average MPG Gage. Your car relies on that to figure out your range.
It calculates the range on how you drove for the last 18 miles. Both my 328xi and 335x usual full tank range always showed 400-450 miles.

In 4 1/2 yrs. on the road, the number one thing that helped fuel economy was to pop a new air filter in, it's common knowledge, but surprising when you see it for yourself. I waited 2 wks. and 1000 miles later to draw my conclusion. I got a 2 mpg bump by replacing a dirty filter. Even though BMW free maintenance didn't consider it dirty, my mpgs told it all. p.s. what significance does range have? Take your avg. mpg and multiply it by how much fuel remains. Why are people fixated upon that number? You have to be able to predict the future for that number to work out. |

OP, you have a new car - it won't give the best performance or mileage until properly broken in. Also, calculate your true gas mileage over a few tanks by dividing miles travelled by gallons of fuel burned and compare that to the computer MPG readout - which you should reset for each fill-up. That will give you a baseline for the OBC error. My manual transmission 328i wagon does about 18~19 mpg in city driving, 20~22 for light susburban traffic, and 28~32 for highway cruising. But like they say, YMMV. Tom |

You'll also notice a pretty big difference if you put in a tank of regular gas instead of premium. To the point where it's actually cheaper to use premium instead of regular gas once you factor in the gas mileage difference. ... I don't encourage using regular when a manufacturer specifies premium, as it ends up retarding the timing on your car which results in lower horsepower and gas mileage. On the flip side, using premium in a car designed to run regular gas is a waste of money. |

Strangely, my milage actually got better when I installed the Dinan Stage 2 software in my 335i.
Could be worse, I used almost 15 gallons in less than four hours and 140 miles at the track last week. That is 9.4 mpg. |

I get about 280 in the city and 350+ on the highways. Flooring it stop sign to stop sign doesn't help it either
