A BMW costing less to own than a Toyota?
I found this article to be very interest, especially as it totally contradicts what so many magazines and car aticles have stated about BMW and how expensive it is to own one.

I dont think anyone can honestly say that BMW's are expensive to own during the warranty period (although the payments can be). Its the after warranty period that most refer to.

Considering I won't own one for more than 3 or 4 years before I trade in and get another one, I dont mind contributing to the used BMW lots

From my experience:
Girlfriend 2004 325xi Mother 2004 Nissan Maxima SE after 3 years I can say the Nissan was double the cost of BMW. Mostly because of the tires (18vs17's for BMW) and brake replacement cost; even if in Canada we have to pay for brake replacement with BMW. My 2001 325CI (sold last year) was trouble free and maintenance cost low over 3 years. |

I loved how all the people were trying to justify a Toyota being better. Or that luxury cars are a pain to own haha.

Wait... the topic is trying to say that it is cheaper to maintain a BMW than to maintain a Toyota! Not the other way around!

I did several comparisons and finally convinced myself that the overall cost of ownership of the 3 Series BMW was so close to the cost of other vehicles over a 3 or 4 year period that it made more sense to own the performance / luxury sport ie the BMW. Since residuals are so high after 3 years (the 335i convertible I just ordered is at 62%) it is especially close for a buy vs a lease when you consider all of the costs especially if you can afford to put 30% down.
I was amazed at the outcome.

Autospies is one of the most amusing automotive websites on the internet.
I'd say that the user base there has the collective cognitive ability of a retarded chimpanzee. That's being generous, of course. In addition to this, the fanboism there reaches levels that would make even an ultra-nationalist politician cringe.

If you compare a top of the line Camry with a stripped down 3-series, and, in addition, assume that you will not need to replace those run flats throughout the lease you get those results.

Title of the article is totally misleading...when you lease, you don't own anything.

Seriously -- step back a couple and look at what's being compared.
Who is really trying to decide on Camry vs. 328 based on total cost during lease? It sounds like a company car decision, not a personal car purchase decision.

I personally think the article is fiddling the numbers the suit the result they want. I check on toyota.ca and bmw.ca and I can get a base camry for $431.96/month for a 36 month lease (excl taxes etc), for a base bmw 323i it comes out to $512/month for a 36 month lease, both with nothing down.
Next up the Camry is bigger car than the 3 series, surely you should try and compare similar sized cars, so you should compare either the camry to the 5 series or the corrola to the 3 series? |

I think the overall message of the article is right -- BMWs are not expensive to maintain during warranty/lease, and can be a very obtainable car for limited budgets. While the details are debatable, the fact is a low-end 3 *is* and entry-level car in many ways.

Remember this is Canadian money: Maxima over 56000KM: 12000Km Inspection/service 325$ 48000km Service+ 4 whl brakes 1250$ Rental car for those two services bc dealer is cheap 75$ 52000KM 4 new tires 1500$ plus 6 oil changes every 6000KM @ 40$ each=240$ Total: 3390$ BMW over 75000KM: Brakes on 4 wheels 950$ Front pads replaced before end of lease: 150$ 4 new tires 1225$ Total: $2325 So 1000$ dif. but the Maxima traveled 20000km less over same period. |
