Am I Losing Power??

i currently have almost 6k miles on my 335i. i had my first oil change at 5k miles and the day i got it back was amazing. moved better then the first day i got my car. but today i noticed that if i step on the gas pedal it isn't as powerful or move as "fast" as it did before...is it just me or can this be a problem?

you just got used to it.... get a chip, for 3 days, you will be like "damn!"
after 3 days, "wtf???" know what I mean?

Drive it today hard. Floor it a lot, drive the damn thing like you stole it.

Tomorrow you will have your power back..

I've had this happen several times. The day after a lot of snow, or a snow storm, where I was barely touching the pedal, the car is extremely sluggish, non-responsive. It feels terrible. Drive it as hard as you will let it, get on the pedal alot, accelerate hard on on-ramps. Then drive it the next day and report back to us..

Did the same thing in my A4. I wish they would get rid of this function..

You could be getting used to the power too. Maybe rent a base level hundai for a day, that could work too..

Are you saying that the car somehow adapts its inner workings (read "response") to the driving style? I was also feeling that every now and then, but I always put it on me being subjective.

Any hard info on that, anyone?

i find that with tubos, the two noticeable "energy sinks" are (a) outside temperature (are you in Cali?) and/or (b) concomitant use of the A/C!

hehe, soon after the post above I took a short drive and "no more mr. nice guy". I thought "economy, what economy? - why did I buy this?".
So fast we went (well, not crazy fast, just spirited, still running it in, ...).

There was an itsy-bitsy change, but probably it's too soon (compared to Matt's post). Maybe tomorrow...

And the best part is

....drums....

average consumption didn't go up, but went _down_.

(OK, I won't count on that. Traffic was lighter; not so many stops. At the end of the day all that power has to come from somewhere, doesn't it?)

I was waiting to check it once more before posting this, but now I can say I agree. I believe it's about us, the drivers.

I do believe //Matt knows his stuff and there is an adaptive feature, but unless explicitly reset it will react too slow for one to make the difference.

There _is_ temperature, and I'm sure it's measurable and we may even "feel" clearly the difference (e.g. cool morning versus hot midday).

But in the end, among all things to consider (temperature, fuel grade, adaptive features, driver mood,...) I believe the driver mood and feelings take the lead.
As long there's no hard measurable way to tell "now I have it, now I don't" it's all about our subjectivity.

When I'm feeling like I need power I may forget to "ask" properly for it (and I mean revving into the proper power band) or I may even get used to what I have and just want more when there's nothing left.

All being said, I wish I could find a measurable, lo-tech way to tell how it's actually performing in _day-to-day_usage_ (i.e. no dyno or such).

Absolutely...

I learned a few years ago in Florida what a dramatic difference heat and Humidity can make.

Also, it's pretty easy to get jaded. Drive a Buddies Camry or something for a little while, then hop back into your car. Should help.

Every time I start taking a car for granted I go ride with a friend in a honda or something, then I'm like "oh yeah, these really are nice"

Go dyno your car. It may be only making 240 whp rather then the standard 260-275.

I had this feeling... and them my fuel pump died... turns out I wasnt crazy... it did lose power... It actually got stronger again the SAME DAY that the pump actually died... I was like "hey... cool, my power is back" and then... "oh SH@#$%@#$ my car wont start"
