I will ask the question to my dealer when the car arrives next week.
In fact, I think that I won't drive the car in the snow anyway and will stick to my good old E30 325Ix Touring for winter duty.

I have ordered BSM with chrome line (never saw any photo in this configuration), what about you?.
There has been a VO delivered in Geneva last week, mine is the second one of a known total of 7 cars for Geneva-canton.

I can only recommend the E30 Ix for (cheap) winter car, it's really a great car.

Just go with a solid 18x8 wheel. A 225 will be good for snow

245 for no snow

Not for me. My 1M will never see a snowy road. I have my STi for that purpose.

I read in several M3 forums that the standard 18" 245 winter tires are really rubbish.
Especially on snow with Michelin Alpin tires.

About the size: On my dad’s 997 turbo the Pirelli winter tires (235/295) are really awesome! I don’t think that smaller tires are better on snow anymore.
But my biggest issue is the fact, that from behind, it would look like you've mounted wheelbarrow tyres. So tiny inside those massive wheel wells

I guess I will go for the standard BMW E92 M3 260-styling rimes with 245/265 tires.

I live in the snowiest city in the US.

It all depends on how much snow you get at any given time.

If you are prone to sub 3" snowfall get skinnier tires

If you are prone to greater than 3" get larger tires

Dunlop wintersport 3Ds are the best tire that I've personally owned with the 135 I've also had pirelli 240 sottozeros and blizzacks.

I run a 225 square setup and I have no issues. It's not like you're driving hard enough in the winter that the differences matter. I have run a 255 in the rear (that was with the pirellis) and it's not as great in heavy snow as the 225 setup

But whatever you do run a square setup in the winter. Rotating tires is a great thing to be able to do

And before anybody jumps on me I do care about the way that my car drives. I run a 245 square setup in the summer

And of you guys are having issues finding wheel & tire combos just search wheels for an M3.

They should all fit the 1M

It has nothing to do with "anymore", it's simple physics.

The wider a tire, the less weight per cm² will be transfered to the surface of the road. And in deep snow, that is a clear disadvantage. The less weight is loaded on the tire, the more the tire will stay on the surface of the snow. The gills/fins (I don't know, what the correct phrase in English is) in the tire cannot "bite" into the snow. The more they are pressed into the snow, the more they will. That's the simple reason, why the cars in the World Rallye Championship are still running very narrow wheels, when they drive on snow and ice.

I had the Michelin Alpine on the M3 and found the tire so awful, that I didn't drive the car during the winter. On Pirelli Sottozeros a different story.

Something to bear in mind: If you buy a winter-tire that can legally run 240km/h, that same tire will need harder rubber than it's brother that is only legalized for 210km/h. Harder rubber means less grip on snow. As a rule of thumb: the faster you can legally run a winter tire, the worse it will be on snow and ice. I'll probably run 210 Sottozeros (as tires that are 245 wide) on the optional M3 winter wheels (cause I have a set of those anyway).

+1000

we got 4-5 winter months and i cannot reach our house without an awd car when there is snow

even 225 sottozero tires on 8x18wheels suck on an average weight car like my s60R

the narrower the better...

on the other hand i had 265 blizzaks on the v10 touareg (about 40% heavier than the volvo) and they worked fine

Thanks a lot!

About the size I was confued by serveral winter "4 wheel drive" tests.
eg. Gallardo Spyder/911/Audi TTS. while breaking the two sportscars were much better than the Audi who had the smallest tires.

Lambo: Pirelli Sottozero front 235/35 R 19 V, rear 295/30 R 19 V
Audi: Dunlop SP Wintersport 3D, 245/40 R 18 V
Porsche: Nokian WR front 235/35 R 19 V, rear 295/30 R 19 V

Of cause the ABS-systems are diffrent but I didn't know the real reason.

Are you driving your M3 duing the winter now with different tires?

Thanks a lot!
