328i top speed..
My conclusion on the top speed.. I have a none sport package 328i, I have hit 130mph a few times but was not table to keep going or sustain it. Well today I was lucky enough to have a nice long 6-8 mile empty stretch of freeway, I went WOT from 100mph and hit 130 and the needle kept going then bam 135 the RPM seemed to just stick and not allow anymore. I let off and went down to 120mph then WOT back to 135 again hitting a limit... So my conclusion is the 130 limit is set to 135 mph to allow for speedometer error of around 5% which seems reasonable. So driving an indicated 50 mph you are really only going 47.5 mph which seems reasonable.

I think somebody posted earlier that there is a setting that can display the real speed which the OBDC keeps track of which is 5% lower than the indicated speed on the speedometer.

Just borrow a portable GPS and read the speed from that.

what is the top speed of e93 w/ sport package... for some reason it seemed the limiter kicked in at 130 mp/h.
Does having the top down make a difference? |

Not sure about the top, but BMW lists the speed as 130mph without the sport package and 150mph with: http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...fications.aspx Same thing for a 335i.

Ive been noticing at several "speed traps" that my speedo reads lets say 40 MPH but the speed trap read out is near 37. Ive hit several different speed traps in different towns and im always off by about 2 MPH.
Like most European cars, they feel slower at speed, but I truly feel the speedo is off. As far as top speed.... Havnt hit the limiter yet |

As noted above, the speedo is off by a few %. Going through the secret menus to get to the digital display will show the true speed.

The speedo get exponentially (sp?) worse as you increase speed. I would not be surprised if the speedo say 130 and you going only 120. They are always off and make the speed look higher than it really is.

I topped out my 2006 BMW 330i at ~145mph.

Search, there are a whole ton of threads on the speedo issue.
It basically comes down to a very strict law in Europe that states the speedo can NEVER, under any circumstance, read below the actual speed of the car. So instead of cutting it close, BMW (and other European cars?) chose to have an offset programed in. There are a series of hidden menus in the E9x cars that allow you to see actual speed vs. reported speed, in KPH only. But it's perfectly normal for these cars to read 2-10MPH slower, depending on speed. My opinion? Pisses me off. and if the law isn't the same in the U.S. they should deprogram this out of U.S. cars. Can't understand why it would be difficult.

The car is perfectly capable of reading the exact speed, the offset is done deliberately.
See here for non-iDrive and here for iDrive.

I felt that my speedometer was off and I too tested it on a couple of those roadside radar things that show your speed. I used the cruise control to be sure I was going a steady speed. On every pass between 40 mph and 70 mph indicated on the speedo the radar sign showed me traveling 4 mph slower than that.
