SUV owner considering 335i
Hey guys, this is my first post so please try to be nice .
I have been driving for about a year now (just turned 17) and I'm considering getting a new car. When i first started driving my parents insisted on me driving an suv as as you could have guessed, its pretty boring. I have a perfect driving record (besides one speeding ticket) and my parents think i am ready to get into a real car. My current car does have pretty good acceleration, handling (for an SUV) and comfort but i'm sick of being so high off the ground and being detached from the driving experience. Of course my first thought was to check out the Ultimate Driving Machine ! So this is what i am looking for. I want something with comperable acceleration that has great cornering and a more involving drive (stick). I also want something less expensive and something that would draw less attention (going off to college in about a year). This has all led me to the 335i. So here is my question: Could anybody offer their opinion as to if this car would be a good choice for me? Also, if anybody had driven the two, could you offer a short comparision between a Cayenne Turbo and a 335i? Before you tell me, I have already tried seaching quite a bit on all of the sub-forums and found nothing. Thanks in advance!!!!! I look forward to posting here! |

First- welcome to the forum.
2- you're gonna get flamed for this (lol) 3- apples and oranges 4- it'd still be hard to compare since most of us on here dont own a Cayenne Turbo 5- just get the car, you wont regret it. |

Welcome to the forum...
You're going to probably get taunted because of your age and the car you want but if your parents can afford the car, then get it. I would point out that because of your age, the 335i WILL attract attention, is not the cheaper decision compared to other cars, and will more than likely spur on ANOTHER speeding ticket. As long as you promise us that you won't race your car doing 90 on a residential street, take driving course lessons, and don't end up a fanboy, you have my blessings (for what it's worth ) |

Take 335i for a test drive -- if you can find one on dealer's lot.

Driving a Cayenne Turbo is boring?? I couldn't imagine something with 500 hp being boring.. But then I looked up the vehicle weight and saw it weighs almost 6000 lbs!!!
Maybe you could drop the engine into the 335?? That would give you a much better power to weight ratio and give you what you are looking for..

Haha that is a sweet idea, Josh49. I only wish.
And yes, i wish i coulde take one for a test drive, but as others aluded to, there are none on dealer lots (that i could find). I know I know what you guys are saying about being spoiled, I told my parents the same thing when they decided to give it to me. If i could have decided i would have totally gotten a different car. You guys kinda hinted at a justification of how a got my car, so here it is before anybody explicitly asks for one. The story of how i got my car is a little complicated. My mom origainally got the car about 6 months before i started driving. She liked it for about the first month but complained of the heavy steering tiring her out (lol). She demanded my father (in a nice way) to get her a new car that was easier to drive. My parents planned on selling it, but when they got a quote from the dealer, they decided the massive hit in depreciation was not worth it. They both liked the car and so did i, so they elected to keep it and at least have somebody in the family enjoy it. Now as it turns out, i have the nicest car in the family (which i feel guilty about). So now i am looking for a slightly more age appropriate car. Another reason, although i probably shouldn't be saying this, hehe, is that my friend burns me (V8 S4) every time we race from a dig. I would really love to get something to wipe the smile off his face |

Having been at college with a nice car, you have to be prepared for a certain amount of attention. You will, however, get less for the 335 than the Porsche.

1. Buy the 335 2. Take the motor out of the 335 and send it to me. I'll be a good guy and take it off of your hands for you.. 3. Take motor out of your Cayenne Turbo. 4. Drop motor into engine bay of 335. Your friend with the S4.. NO PROBLEM MON!!!

Haha 911 Turbo guys???? JEEZZ. I'm not made of money. I want a CHEAPER car not a more EXPENSIVE car.
I appreciate everybodies comments, and yes, the 335i would still attract some attention, but at alot of the colleges i have visited i have seen numerous e90's rolling around. One thing i will miss, however, is the hauling capabilities of my truck. The size has come in handy many times before. New years eve i had 4 kegs rollin around back there with the seats down. hehe. good times. One other thing that is going to bug me is whether to get the e90 or e92. hmmmm.... good looks vs. practicality. whats your take on this guys? |

I liked that sentence. I suppose having one speeding ticket in a year of driving is "perfect" compared to most 17 year-olds.
Not a flame, just struck me as funny.

I've driven both (someone traded in a cayenne turbo for an x5 a few months ago). I say go for the 335. it looks like a sedate 3 series... unless you know about the telltale signs (chrome trim, chrome front lip trim and dual exhausts) no one will know. I personally disliked the drive of the cayenne... even with the suspension in the lower setting and dampers turned up it just didn't feel direct or attached to the road (keep in mind I drive a MINI and BMWs all day long). I think the 335i is just what you're looking for and man is it a ton of fun! let me know where you are and I'll locate one at a dealer near you so you can test drive it (rather than driving through lots hunting for them).

Get the car that makes you happy not other people happy.. I learned that and got a 328i because I was tired of having high performance cars that needed to visit the dealer every few months. People will give you crap for buying what you like but hey in the end of they day they ride in it for maybe a few hours a month and you have to live with it everyday.
I personally would get a 4 door car after having a coupe I hated it but thats just me, get what you want. |
