Early 2007 I-drive - Tips / Nav CD's / Software Updates
OK, my early 2007 335d has the DVD based nav on it, and the 5 digit postcode search is wank. Who's the chap I need to talk to about a later disc with the 7 digit malarky on it?
Also, are there any software updates for the system, I don't know if its supposed to have remedial patches (like microsoft do every 2.6 minutes) for bug fixes and I just want to make sure everythings up to date. |

He said it was an early one which is shit.
@OP - you can get a later DVD which includes 7 digit postcode search, guy called Sergei I think. As for the general software the dealer is the only one who can upgrade that.

My Dash board tells me all of that information about service etc.
My tomtom does all the nav bits and WAY more. Weather, google etc has been around for years in tomtom. Oh btw when your Idrive tells you where all the speed cameras are including warnings comeback and tell me. When you get a touch screen instead of that fiddly knob also let me know. Oh and when its £250 not £1500 then also drop me a note :P oh and album art is so ipod 2006. Plus when your bmw is in the garage for weeks on end (like they all are) you will have fun with no Nav. Mine will be £1500 cheaper than the Nav cars and dont forget EVERY Idrive system is out of date by the time you come to sell it. But the truth is you will be giving that Idrive away in order to sell your car, the value will not be any higher. Look at the 2007 idrive this guys got... my cars 2007 and i dont have his problems. Nav is not the be all and end all of a sports Coupe. idrive is a luxury for the technology illiterate of the 7 series owners You know... the people who still use a Nokia mobile phone. Why you would spend £1500 on a piece of technology in your car that you rely on BMW to Update to keep relevant HAHA! HAVE YOU SEEN BMW's PHONE COMPATIBILITY LIST? Its like the 2004 Mobile awards all over again. £1500 to install it and £250 to update it to make it work with your phone.. Yh good call. Last edited by Pandamonia; 06-16-2011 at 04:55 AM.. |

This thread has the potential to get a 'best thread' award and maybe, just maybe, some bans (Matt, come out of hibernation for this one mate ).
I recently bought a modern TomTom (just before I got the 370Z) and was mightily impressed with all the 'live' features. Traffic, cameras, weather, google search, etc, and all for about £170 from memory. So, yes, one part of me wouldn't want to spend nearly £1,500 on an in-car version, which in all honesty doesn't add value to your resale price (but does make it more attractive and will sell quicker) when a TomTom virtually does the trick BUT, I'd still always spec idrive & nav, even given the cost, as it's just so nicely intergrated into your car, and the latest version look bloody fantastic. As comparison, the Nissan SatNav, even on my previous 08 plate 350Z, was absolutely fantastic and easily competed with TomToms of the time. The new one in my 370Z is even better again (touch-screen, full postcode, speed cameras, full ipod intergration, hard-disc for music, DVD playback, etc). But the screen isn't as big as the Beemer .

I'm not convinced that the new disc with 7 digit post code will give that functionality with an early i drive. I have the DVD 'Professional' version in our 2007 130i. Last year I bought a 2010 disc but it only had the 5 digit search.
One option though is to pay £10 per month to subscribe to BMW Assist. One of the most useful of the functions that this includes is the ability to look up a destination on your PC through Google Maps and send it to your car. All that having been said, I must admit that the early DVD i drive is a bit disappointing, however the new Hard Drive version in our 330d is outstanding. |

You're right - the tomtom on a wobbly sucker is much better. Mind you, this is coming from someone who believes the engine in the 320d is the best in BMW's range....

Just ordered a 2011 DVD from this outfit http://www.bmw-satnav.co.uk/index.ph...838c258b2d0ac7
Same applies - 5 digit postcode only. How else would you use a dvd in a bmw if it doesn't have idrive. |

read this "CIC-based systems use maps from TeleAtlas which are installed on an internal 2.5" 40GB Hard Disk Drive (HDD). This HDD can also store up to 8GB of music files for playback. For facilitating the uploading of music files to the HDD, a USB port is provided in the glove box." ONLY bmw are stupid enough to put a £20 spinning platter HDD in a car! Rather than pay for Flash memory which is faster and safer, They put a HDD inside which doesnt play well with motion! Braking and other issues will cause this HDD to fail one day and with it goes your Nav system, HDD are the most unreliable part of a computer for this very reason people are moving to flash based memory. But dont worry they always last for about 3-4 years right until your warranty ends. Words fails me. |

If you are in say Entertainment, and want to go to say Nav, then you dont need to go back via the menus. Simply hold the big knob for a few seconds in the direction of the Nav menu and voila. |

As for tom tom v idrive. FFS. The only people that promote tom tom over built in nav are those people that coudn't find, or afford the car in the spec they wanted. Or get lumbered with a poverty spec version as they scrape on to the bottom of the company car ladder.
I'm off for a long weekend shortly, look forward to seeing how this thread looks on Monday. |
