SERVICE LIGHT. is this normal?

Car is 1 year old, 10,000 miles, and the required maintaince light came on a month ago. It comes on everytime when i start the car and then it goes away. I haven't had time to bring it back to the dealer for the required service, so after another 2 hundred miles the "service" light, instead of being yellow turns RED when i start the car. Then it goes away as usual. that's the only problem now. normal?

It is turning red because you are overdue for service; you need to make an appointment. Getting your oil changed is not something to play around with. Personally I think going 10-15k betweek oil changes is too long and I pay out of pocket to have one done in between service intervals.

Go check what kind of service it needs. 1 year and 10000 miles seems a bit low for any sort of service due. Unless there's a problem. The car doesn't even ask for an oil change till in the high 10000miles or 2 years.

Also check to see if your car's date is set correctly. Having the date/month/year set incorrectly will cause incorrect warnings for service.

when i got the car in march of 2006, it said next service is march 2007 or 12000/13000 miles. I had an oil change in sept 2006(i paid), and i told them NOT to reset the maintanence.

I know you are supposed to do that and BMW does that for you for free too in Canada and the US. But the problem is the car doesn't tell you to go at 1 year point. It still asks you to go in 2 years time according to condition based service indicator. Unless the later models actually reminds you to go after one year, the OP's indicator for service is considered abnormal most likely.

It could be the one year of service or the brake fluid warning. I know mine lit up for a brake fluid service at the 1 year mark.

I got my oil change at the first anniversary (8000 miles).
May 2007 will be the second anniversary and when I start the car I can see the (yellow) service light appearing...
Oil interval says 04/2007
Something else also says 04/2007, so, that is the reasn and I expect the light to turn red if I wait till May.

I have 12,200 miles on the Odo...

Could this be a warning letting him know the inspection is about to be up?

lol--its just cause you like to drive a little more maybe? or have a longer commute? Sometimes I have to work 7 days a week, and when I am just going from my place to the train station, I only put 10 miles a day on the car....so when the miles are low, I know I've been working too much...
