2 fobs as Oz said, but they stopped giving the spare/emergency plastic key as of MY2007. Since then BMW Assist can remotely unlock your car if you lose your keys.

On the MY06, I can take my spare plastic key, open the door, then pull the spare fob from the glovebox and with the key inside the spare fob, start the car...

Is there still a spare fob in the glovebox?

Didn't you know, keeping a spare in the glove compatment is normal practice? All the car thieves know this. Ask anyone who has ever had their car broken into. They always look in there. Why? They are looking for your spare! They usually break the side window, go straight to glove box especially on bimmers (They have coded driver away which makes hot wiring almost imossible). I assume you have insurance, but get it actually driven away is soo inconvinient! Now you know, tell your friends too....

I don't see why you see keeping the spare fob (for use with the emergency key) there - since BMW mounts it there deliberately.

If you've lost your key and they've stopped including the emergency key, what bloody good is remotely unlocking the car? You can't start the thing.

The fob for spare is MEANT to be in the glove box, hell it has a special slot for it. The emergency FOB NEEDS the plastic INSIDE it to work. You can't do anything with it if you don't have the spare plastic in it.

For non-CA cars, if you've locked your keys inside, then calling BMW Assist would help. Now if you lost it... SOL!

Because thieves know its put there by BMW and they consider it an emergency.

It wont work for them, because the emergency key you have to slot into it contains the elecronics to start the car.

The emergency FOB is just basically a piece of plastic and useless without the small spare key

Isnt that small spare key also put in the glove compartment by most salesperson's? Not that this really matters anymore considering the cars dont come with this emergency key fom now on.
