is the RFT insurance worth it?

i have heard it costs around $500 for 3 years. i thought RFT technology would make it less likely of replacing tires? i mean RFT can be repaired, so is this insurance really worth it??

as you can see in my sig, i did get ZSP. (also had ZSP with no ins. on my '01 325Ci)

Thanks!

I think the insurance is definitely worth it because RFT can not be repaired. Once you get a puncture in one you just have to toss it. The tires also cost around $800-900. Remember that the insurance is unlimited claims so you basically get free tires for 3 years.

Had a screwdriver go through my runflat. Insurance covered the total cost at the dealer which was in the $325 range. Dealer had the the insurance company so I didn't have to lay money out and then be reimbursed.

I wasn't going to take out the insurance at first, my wife gave me lot of dirty looks, bit the cast and glad I did.

Not $800-$900 per tire. I just had all 4 of my RFTs replaced by the dealer (replaced the Turanza's with Contis). Since this was done IAW the TSB, it didn't cost me anything, but the cost of the job (materials and labor) was about $650 total I think. Definitely under $700 for all four tires.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the insurance doesn't cover replacing the tires due to tread wear -- only accidental issues (ie- picking up a screw). If that is the case, then you'd have to have at least two flats due to picking up screws, etc. in just three years. I think back and can't remember ever getting that many flats in just 3 years.

Not worth it IMO. In fact, there are very VERY few of those dealer add-ons that I can think of that are actually a good deal... please correct me if I'm wrong.

This is not entirely accurate. You can have a RFT repaired if the sidewall has not been compromised by driving on it for a length of time in its deflated state.

Thanks scuba stever! EVEN MORE JUSTIFICATION that this is simply for people to have a clear state of mind and convience....as i would assume most people do not claim the amount they shell up front.

Here's a question:
Does the insurance cover YOUR CAR or THOSE specific tires on the car. That is to say, if I drive 30k miles per year and have to replace the wonderful stock Turanzas at that point (even tho we all know Turanzas last muuuuch longer than 30k miles), does your warranty leave when you replace the tires? I believe it does. If that's the case, then almost NO ONE would ever see the full three years of the warranty, making it even less useful (or more useless?).

I think the only way to answer this question with any certainty is to read the documents that come with the warranty.

I heard that you can get tire insurance from AAA or tire stores. Not sure but it might be worth it to run a search.

I've DEFINITELY gotten at least 2 nails in my tires in 3 years in the past. Let's hope that doesn't happen this time around.

I think a lot of people are skipping the tire insurance because they want an excuse to switch out the RFTs to regular tires. But if you want to keep the runflats, insurance might be worth it. But again, go look elsewhere for better prices.

I can confirm RFT's are repairable, like any other tire actually.

I would like the availability to have them switched out at the dealer/factory with regular rubber for a no charge option. The hell with the spare, you have BMW Roadside Assistance anyway.

But the spare tire would mess with the near perfect 50-50 weight distribution that we enjoy!

I am not the type to get extended warranty or any other warranty that the dealer tries to sell, but I did get the RFT insurance.

For me, it was $600 CAD, for 4 years, and not only covers the factory RFT tires, but also dents to the wheels. The insurance for me is great because it will cover any tires and wheels that are on the car, this means will cover the new tires when the RFT will be replaced and it also cover my winter tires and wheels.

They will repair or replace the wheels if damage, the 162s and the winters.

In my area, there are allot of potholes, almost guaranty I will bend a wheel or two, so it was a no brainer...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the insurance doesn't cover replacing the tires due to tread wear -- only accidental issues (ie- picking up a screw). There is no way...im coming to your dealer, i just got quoted 465 for ONE left rear tire not even mounted or anything. Run flats cannot be repaired, even if they can technically good luck finding a shop that will do it i went to 8 shops and none of them would do it. Finnialy after bitching the dealer out im getting a free damn tire. But yea that answerers your questions i hope, insurance is defnality worth it.
