should i do a muffler delete?
i know this has been discussed before but i wanted to know peoples thoughts for my particular situation. i want a loud start up sound. loud idle, and loud under acceleration. but while cruising at highway speed have it not be to loud. tell me what you guys think. thanks
also what does having an auto have to do with anything? i was searching and people were talking about doing the muffler delete with an auto, how does that effect anything? thanks Last edited by michaelalex17; 05-07-2011 at 02:06 PM.. |

I think you should do it, it's not loud at cruising speeds but the drone in 6th sometimes can get annoying. But if you're like me and love the sound you will get used to it and not care.

Don't do it. One of my roommates has it on his 07 E90 335i and it sounds like a boat. every morning when he leaves for class and when he gets back we can hear him quite a ways away (not in a good way like with my other roommates 996 turbo with cutouts).
save up some $$ and do a custom exhaust, something like magnaflow mufflers with deleted cats. then in the future you can do DPs and add more sound to it. you'll be much happier you waited..

both. when it's cold and idling its loud and not a good note, and when youre driving the drone is unbelievable. i don't know how he drives it on a daily basis.. some people love it (he's 19 and liked getting everyone's attention driving through campus) and other people on this forum swear it's great. It just doesn't sound good to me, and definitely doesnt sound like it should be coming from a BMW

noooooope, dunno why but that video sounds a lot better. Maybe it has to do with the fact that my roommates is a sedan/longer piping? not a clue, but it's definitely not the same

Yes, don't do it. I was pulled over by cops because they thought it was too loud. Luckily they didn't look under the car but it draws unnecessary attention to yourself. In addition, it doesn't sound very clean, rather mangly and throaty, which I don't prefer. Also, mufflers are decently important as you want some back pressure in the system. You will loose HP from a muffler delete (not much). It is smarter to delete your cats and have high flow mufflers so some back pressure is sustained and you won't draw a lot of attention (unless you have eisenmann race). Just my opinion and do what you want with it. Good luck.

Valvetronic mufflers paired with secondary cat delete is the way to go. You can have the valves open when you want more sound, and closed when you dont.

Videos on the internet do not give a good representation of what it sounds like in person. Your best bet is to find someone local who has it, and check it out in person. I heard it in person, and it was way too loud for my taste. The drone would also kill me and any passengers on long trips.

just do it. it's cheap. and if you don't like the sound, you can always put some mufflers on later. it really doesn't sound that bad at all. cold starts are obviously going to be a bit loud and you do get some drone in 6th cruising on the highway.
