Just ran against a JB4 tune:)
Had a little meet with a few Calgary members on the forums here. After the meet me and Bigup went cruising to test out our cars.
I'm in a steptronic sedan with COBB AP running the 2.02 STD 91 octane map. He has a 6 speed manual coupe running a JB4 Stage 1 map. I must say, the pulls were identical! We pulled from 60Km, 80Km, 120Km ETC.. Both cars were side by side the entire time. I have not tried running the 93 octane map yet, I'll find some 94 octane fuel at one of the gas stations and give it a go on the weekend. I'm sure it will give me a nice little power boost Wildest thing, while we are both having fun testing our cars, some young kid in a 2010 or 2011 Subi STI came out of no where!! Later on when I talked to him via rolling down the window, he mentioned he was running a Stage 2 tune. We both took turns rolling with him, 60Km, 80Km, 10Km We both completely destroyed him! At one point, I was in the far left lane, Subi was in the middle lane, Bigup was in the right lane. We all took off from 80K, it was picture perfect! BMW's pulled 2 car lengths before slamming on the breaks. God I love my BMW It was an ooooohh myyy goood moment.. |

I must admit this is somewhat bitter-sweet for me as I likely tuned both your car and the Subaru I am the lead calibrator for our Subaru project as well and spend a good bit of time in our in-house '11 STi. Number's don't lie though...your car should walk him pretty good Here's our 335i on OTS Stage1 vs an average Stage2 08+ STi on our dyno here in Austin:
http://accessecu.com/dyno/graph.php?...rgb2=204000000 I have a unique affinity for both cars. What's funny is they go about their business in 100% opposite ways. The 335i is quiet, refined, smooth, deceptively fast, full of high tech..."adult"...and has no traction to make use of a whole mountain of power. The STi is raw, loud, basic, amazingly low tech...and makes use of every last bit of the power available thanks to an amazing drivetrain. Both are "enthusiast" cars in every sense of the word. Cheers- Lance |

I've run against a friend with a STi in my old SLK55. From what I remember, he would destroy me at launch but once at 60-80mph, I would pull. I don't think they're geared for top speed at all. Again, thats from what I remember. Could be wrong.
Lance, I think you've summed it up very well. I was very close to buying a STi but couldn't get past the 'economy car' feel of the interior dash etc. Seats were nice though. |

Thanks for adding that lance! It was the STI Hatch, so I'm thinking 2010 or 2009?
Just goes to show how incredible your COBB tune is for the 335i's! Just found out some great news btw! There are 4 gas stations within 15 mins of me * which apparently sell 94 octane * As soon as my gas tank is empty I'm going to fill up and switch to the 93 octane map!!! Any body who has run both? Will I feel a noticeable difference in power? |

Hey, have you heard of Davenport? Steve is a good friend. I'm also running a Cobb Stage 1 on my 535. The car is really fast with the tune. Actual had a run in with a 2010 GT3 a couple weeks ago. What a bad ass car. We went from a 15 mph roll to approx. 100 mph, and he was only 3 to 3-1/2 car lengths ahead of me. I was shocked that I actually hung with this guy. Thank you Cobb. |

Very interesting posts. Thanks for the info lance. I had a 2006 sti stage 2 and now I have a 2008 335xi coupe stage 1 93 octane version 2.02 V2. In the sub you really had to work your launch (awesome manual) to get good track numbers. On the highway it was slow. My new Xi handled way worse than my sti stock but I recently upgraded my suspension to bilstein H&R combo and now it handles perfect. I am 32 and the sti was too boy racer for me. The accessport for the BMW was so powerful and smooth and simple. I have an auto and all I do is hold the brake and floor it (turn off DTC) and with no other mods Im running 12.6 in the quarter. I am COBB for life. BTW my dad had a 2010 legacy GT with COBB accessport and that tune blew my mind.

Hey really great story.
What overall times 1/4th mile times are you running with 91 oct. or your friend on his JB4 map1. Have you guys looked at dyno numbers and compared them. Just wondering as I am running JB4 map 1.

So true tscdennab, plus Living at high altitude with a tune demanding to run alot more boost and with 91oct., is not in their favour but on a tune not controlling any timing, it would be worse since it would be pulling timing like crazy....Calgary is 3400 ft above sea level.

I have a Cobb and I love it. However, you have to think about the fact that the Subaru is only running a 4 cylinder turbo motor thats pushing more then 8lbs of boost stock while we are running an inline 6 twin turbo at only 8lbs stock. The reason are cars make so much more power off of a tune is because the boost levels from the factory are very conservative. So a tune on our cars will definitely do a lot more. However, for a 4 cylinder motor the STI stock makes really great power. I love my BMW but the STI is also a great car.
