Aftermarket radiators and/or transmission coolers

So I have the ER Race Oil Cooler setup and it works beautifully. Unfortunately, since I have an AT, My coolant temps are not great and I can get limp mode due to this.

Where are the radiators for AT people that Mt folks would benefit from too?

Looking for a solution, I went to the Ferrari and race care builder garage around the corner from my office and asked what they would do (they don't know the 335 that well). Here's what they said:
Put in a high quality replacement transmission cooler core on top of the intercooler that is as wide as possible. It needs to be about 3 inches tall. This way it won't get in the way of the radiator too much. Should cost about $500.00 for parts and labor.
Thoughts?

Yeah, its either you address the coolant temps, or the trans temps (Since both are connected via the heat exhanger). Addressing the trans temps has the added benefit of extending the life of the transmission. I've been working on this two, and I'm trying to get a small but efficient trans cooler, mounted on my radiator, that runs in series to the heat exchanger. Luckily, tranny coolers are really cheap! So for less than $200 I should be able to get this done. I'm headed to my mechanic right now oddly enough, and we are going to talk more about this. If all goes well I should have it installed next week. Looking at a derale 13401.

+1

I hope the tuning companies gather the increasing demand for cooling options for us guys who take the N54 around a real track.

Turkey Baster, Please share your results. I'm between a rock and a hard place with this as I am in the process of purchasing an E36 M3 track car but it will take a while before I ever drive it on the track.

I could deal with up to 300.00 on a tranny cooler. I checked out some cores and lines and it is definitely not very expensive.

I just found out my tiny little tranny cooler is leaking. It's under warranty. Have you seen how small this thing is? Crazy.

Subscribed.

Where are you planning to tap into the system? The heat exchanger is really crammed in there.

Well right now, I've talked to my mechanic, and he thinks its possible. For you guys, you could just slap on any of the oil coolers out there. Its best to get one with a setrab core, like the ones derale offers. As for me, I retrofitted the ar design oil cooler, so its looking like a tight fit for me. Next week, I'll finalize things, and let you guys know how it goes. If I am successful with an install, I'll post pics.

Why not just add a second radiator ? Of course though you will have to go through BMW for this as it does require upgrading your DME. Cost is about $2500.00

getting a larger OC and adding a second radiator should do the job ?

Wrong. The 2.500 are for the whole OEM power kit including a software update to get 325hp at the crank.
You can purchase the secondary water radiator for 500ish. No need to upgrade the DME.

the setup I would want

Hey all, Since I ave both wheel wells occupied with oil coolers this is the setup I would want:
  • Use a core that is approximately 20-W x 3-H x 3-D
  • This is about 4 times the capacity of the stock unit
  • Place the tranny cooler on top of the intercooler allowing reasonable air flow to it even though it is mostly hidden behind the bumper.
  • It won't obstruct the radiator much at all.

The AR retrofit blocks too much flow to the radiator for me but let's see how it works. Maybe the increased cooling to the tranny will offset the diminished radiator cooling. It's all on you Turkeybaster.

Turkeybaster, what ever transpired of this? Very interesting. Also, who is your local shop designing the spec?

See earlier post of mine. Wide and short core tranny cooler on top of the IC. If you don't have to block anything don't. I researched available cores and there are a few that will achieve this.

Might want to look at how the M3 DCT is cooled. A good description can be found here http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthr...mission+cooler.

I've worked through the same thing but haven't done anything because I haven't experienced high transmission temp induced limps yet.

I currently have a stage 2 STETT oil cooler installed. If I needed to add a transmission oil cooler I would install MOCAL OT/1 oil stat in the oil line from the transmission to the original transmission oil cooler. I'd locate the new transmission cooler in the left hand wheel well or above the FMIC.

The reason I'd keep the original oil cooler and have it last in the oil flow is that the original oil cooler is also used to warm the transmission (where it get cold this is important).

If I needed in increase the radiator cooling I'd add in a cooler like the stage 2 STETT inside the lefthand wheel well and use the OEM pipes.

I'm doin the 2nd radiator fro the BMW Performance kit in the left wheel well with the VK oil cooler(found one used) in the stock oil cooler location. If the VK is not enough the AR 2nd oil cooler can be added easily in front of the stock radiator. Since the tranny fluid is tied to the water cooling system through heat exchanger I'm hoping the 2nd radiator will take care of the water and tranny temps. I will let you all know. Installing all mid August with Mtech front bumper with foglight delete and 335is scoops.
