Many have said that the F10 M5 makes an impression closer to the E39 M5 than the immediately preceding E60 M5, by ditching the E60's more avant garde lines and styling for the more direct and linear lines of the E39 generation. To us, this observation certainly has some merit, as borne out by the photo comparison below. To our eyes, the concept F10 M5 seemingly occupies the space between the E39 and E60 iterations - toning down the at-times controversial E60's curvacious and nontraditional cutlines, but adding more flow and dynamic surface changes to the E39's more classic upright design.

I still love the E39 M5. It has a very timeless design.

To me aesthetics are very subjective I personally like the new design although I think it has too many elements already familiar from the X SUV's which detracts from sportiness and originality. The biggest difference is size and weight, the F-10 is closer to 2000 740i than the 2000 M5, by the way at 4290 that 740i may actually be lighter than the F10 M5. When the e39 debuted, I thought it was a bit overweight at 3950 pounds, the f-10 M5 may be as much as 400 heavier. It is virtually a whole new different class of car.
It will be very fast, but it will never escape the feel and consequences of it's size and weight.

+1. And I always thought it would look alot better without the bumper strips:

And how about an interior compare*? On the left, it's not the M5 interior of course, but its close enough for a comparison. Inside and out, e39 is still looking good and definitely one of my favorite Bimmers.

* image on right is credit to ScottChu Photography. I cropped the pic for the compare

Who is calling the E39 M5 grandpa? seeing ours in the garage puts a smile on my face and the torque will kick you in the backside. While it may not have the power of the new ones it has enough power and looks great!!!!

Honestly, the new 5 is looking a lot better than the E60 and (dare I say) the E39.

I am almost with you.

BMW is sending a message with this comparo: We are trying to recreate the masterpiece that is the e39 M5, and improve upon it. Which is a great message. And when you look closely, the new M5 mimics the e39 in many ways. So respect to the BMW designers, and respect to BMW for realizing that classic and simple are a winning combination.

In my eyes the new M5 could only be better if it was 10 - 20% smaller in all dimensions.
