Warning 2009+ 335i: To those getting HPFP and software recall! Listen Up!
Okay, for those of you who have a 2009, 2010 BMW 335i with the new CIC Navigation (hard drive based) I-drive: Before you take your car in for the high pressure fuel pump replacement and engine/radio software recall, you must know one thing!
There is a SERIOUS FAULT going on with the new software update for the 2009+ CIC radio. Apparently, the software is coding all 2009/10 vehicles as a 2011.5 BMW. What happens is, they upgrade your I-drive software to utilize "COMBOX". If you are not familiar, Combox is a new hardware that allows web surfing, Office Messages, etc. These features are ENABLED in the menu but they are useless because the COMBOX hardware is not equipped. Aside from that, the new problems are: -the MP3s from the USB/IPOD no longer display the songs correctly ! -the AUX MP3 IMPORT (upload) function to the hard drive is GONE ! -Satellite Radio is GONE ! -Bunch of submenus are enabled but useless because COMBOX isn't installed But this is NOT the major pain of the problem. The BIGGEST PROBLEM IS: The dealer apparently is having problems fixing it! They have spent 3 days with my car trying to code the new software to a 2009 spec but have ultimately failed. They gave me a Camry to drive and after not fixing it for three days, they finally upgraded me to a stripped-down 2011 328i, which I must say is an absolutely HORRENDOUS car compared to my loaded 335i coupe. I am so glad, I went with a 6MT btw. So if you are going to bring your car in for a HPFP recall and software update, and you have the 2009+ CIC I-drive, be fore-warned, your dealer will most likely SCREW up your programming!!! Please see these two threads for more specific details and screenshots regarding the problem: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=493783 http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=473145 Last edited by nukezero; 02-25-2011 at 08:31 PM.. |

Let us know what happens. I wonder if this is happening to all 2009+ cars or just a select few. If it's happening to all cars I would think a lot more people would be complaining.

I don't know what they are going to do. They may try to keep programming it. I would "suspect" they may consider installing the "Combox" . But that is probably the last worst case scenario. I will take the new software ONLY if they install the hardware 'Combox'. But like I said, this is not likely to happen as this is not a normal option that can be readily integrated.
The second scenario they COULD likely do is completely tear out my entire navi system and use a 2011.5 navi/radio which would mean with a combox as well. But this is the most far-fetched scenario I could think of. The most likely scenario would be they would probably have BMWNA or BMWAG ship me a new DME/I-drive module that works. |

the problem is, not many people are anal enough to notice that the satellite radio is missing, the USB AUX import is not working, and the song titles aren't being displayed. They just think that it is nice to have new submenus and stuff that DON"T EVEN WORK because the combox is missing.

Same problem here. Once i select a song from my ipod using the idrive it won't let me play any other track...just keeps playing the same track over and over. Doesn't display tracks correctly, and a few other annoyances.

Yes! This happened to me. I just gave it back to them, and they had to keep it all weekend to get the right shit in my idrive.

There is a very simple fix, if your dealer cannot do it, then they just have no clue. I have seen this happen many times recently when programming a car with the CIC. A coding error happens when programming the car. Like you state, Ipod, MP3s etc do not work properly. If the dealer read faults, they will see there is a CIC Coding Error. All they need to do is hook the car back up for programming and code the CIC. Its very simple, and has worked for me tons of times when this issue has happened.
There is no need to tear out any parts, or replace anything. If the dealer took the proper steps to diagnose the problem they will see they can program the car 2394832094983209 times its not going to fix it, the just need to CODE the CIC. If they ran the test plan for the CIC Coding error fault, it will tell them the same, to Code it. Quote:

I'm pretty sure there will be at least 10 more posts with possible fixes listed. Nobody reads through entire threads...c'mon, what's the matter with you?

Now, I heard that there was some people who had their car reprogrammed and it just kept crashing and failing. Finally, he said the dealer had called someone from corporate to come down and fix it manually using a laptop. I wonder if the same is going to happen. Although, I am super worried as much, they did give me a 2011 328i to drive and yes although it is horrendous to drive, it's still better than the camry and I'm putting miles on their car. |

Good luck OP, really frustrating when updated software breaks things. Imagine how much all of this would $$$ for a car out-of-warranty or beyond the platinum coverage. You pay by the hour while the dealership sends the techs to school with your car.

This can be fixed easily OP. It happened to me. I took it back in; asked them where my Satellite radio went. They looked at me stupid for a minute, and asked me if I had it before. I told them I drove in here this morning listening to it!!
They kept the car over the weekend as it was Friday. They got the reprogramming correct, and all is good now. Just take it back and have them reprogram it!

Mine was flashed Wednesday. I have a 2009. I have the Ripped Track issue but I did not lose Sirius. Haven't tried the USB port yet.

I just had my HPFP/software recall taken care of earlier this month, and I'm not having any of the problems cited by the OP. My dealer must have done it right. Of course, they scratched the hood while they had it. Plus, they washed it when I specifically told them not to. The "DO NOT WASH" sign was laying in the back seat.
