I bought one from Amazon but really wasn't that impressed with it. Reminded me very much of an Etch-A-Sketch. I also found that it's wireless connection was not great and it kept disconnecting from my home network. I sent it back in the end and think that I will stick to physical books in the meantime.

Interesting, was yours the later model? I've just realised it's has no back light and they want you to spend another £50 on some case come extended light thingy.

Daughter got one of the new ones for Christmas and she hasn't put it down since. No problems with wifi and the screen is very readable, and just like a book, doesn't have a back-light... so you put a light on rather than read in the dark. She bought a case for hers on eBay for £15. I'm quite impressed with it and if I read more, I'd probably consider getting one myself.

Yes mine was the latest model and none of them have backlights. When I realised that I could read a printed newspaper in light that I could not read the Kindle I decided that the screen was just too dull.

If Kindle books were a lot cheaper I would probably have kept it but I felt that i would be paying the same for an inferior product.

On the plus side it was pretty good for reading in bright light as there was very little reflection compared to an iPad. Apparently the Sony reader is even better for low light reflection.

I think my Missus needs to rethink. Cheers

No problem. The other thing is that the screen is a lot smaller than a standard book. About double the size of an HTC Desire/iPhone.

She doesn't need a re-think, Del, they're fcuking brilliant.

They don't have a backlight (and neither does a printed book) because the idea is the electronic ink display (as opposed to LCD) looks just like paper so you can read for hours without eye strain which you can't on an LCD display. Battery lasts for weeks and it can even read to you with surprising accuracy in the car - I feed it through the AUX in the car and get it to read the newspaper to me on the way to work.

I've had no wireless issues - downloads a book in about 5 seconds and if you get the 3G model you get free wireless Internet anywhere in the world.

I think it's amazing - missus got me one for my birthday and I haven't stopped using it.

Re. the screen being smaller than a "standard" book I'm not sure what the "standard" size is. However, it probably is a bit smaller than most paperbacks but then you can select the text size, spacing, number of words per page etc to suit your own eyesight.

My daughter was saying she's only paid for one book (that cost her £2.50 instead of £5 for the printed version). All the other multitude of books she's downloaded from Amazon have been free.

A standard paperback is about 9 inches whereas the Kindle is 6 inches. I maybe did not give it enough time to get used to the smaller size. The problem is that my eyesight is soo bad now I would only get 2 words per page without my reading glasses/contact lens.

I tried to convert a few newspapers using Calibre but it was playing up and the finished item looked much better on my HTC Desire despite it's teeny screen. My wireless problem were probably due to the wireless hub being 2 floors away but everything else works OK.

I agree though that the lack of back light does make it much easier on the eyes.

Despite there being 1/2 million books available I really struggled to find some of the ones that I wanted and those that I did find were full price. Obviously books that are out of copyright are free but I've already read Dracula and Frankenstein Yes yes I know that there are loads of others.

I think that I am just at that age where if something isn't "perfect" I just reject it. You know "Grumpy Old Man"

The liquid ink technology is ground breaking.

I had one, my sister got for my birthday, and i read a few books on it, and thought it was brilliant. Its much bigger than an Iphone.

If you read books/commute to work it's a brilliant device.

i live 10 mins drive from work and spend my evenings online rather than reading books, so i gave it back to my sister. But if i was travelling for a year again, it would be in my bag for sure. Great device.
