With Performance Exhaust already installed.....
what would you prefer to have for the intake, a performance or injen? and what is the reason why? please help me decide and price on performance will not be an issue.

Well since performance is not an issue, either should work since intakes won't net you any power anyway.

A lot of people bash the BMW Perf. intake and say it's too expensive for what you get, etc. I don't really think $675 shipped is too terrible for an intake with a very large carbon fiber cover and OEM fitment, but it really is dependent upon your individual perspective. I would think that out of all the options, the BMW unit would be least likely to result in drone or other unpleasantness. In fact, my understanding is that the BMW part includes a "sound generator" like on the Z4 3.0is that basically pipes a pleasing engine note into the cabin. A little gimmicky, maybe, but I suppose it could ostensibly help with shift points and besides, who wouldn't appreciate a better soundtrack while driving? Personally, I plan on pairing this part with the BMW Perf. exhaust eventually (hopefully sooner rather than later).
I suspect this would be a much more popular mod if it were available for the 135i. |

I have the Burger Motorsports dual cone intake and love it. It's way cheaper than the BMW performance intake as well.

I spent some time listening to the BMW intake on a members' 128. His assessment is that he probably wouldn't do it again. I decided to save my bucks.

What more do you want to know? It doesn't net you any noticeable gain so why does it even matter? If you really want one then get the cheapest one since nobody will ever see the CF of the uber-expensive BMW Perf piece.

I listened to sound files for the Injen and AFe intakes before getting the exhaust. Both intakes seemed to drone at certain rpm levels. There are some good reviews in the 128 section.

I've never heard an intake that droned in my life. That's an exhaust characteristic.

Ok, this is what I am talking about. So the drone comes out of the exhaust, stock or not, but the change is triggered by the install of the intake. See the updates in this thread:

I installed the BMW performance exhaust one week (before Christmas), and then installed the BMW performance intake system a week later. I loved the exhaust and still do, but things got louder with the addition of the performance intake. I got a hint of drone and a deeper tone at low rpms, neither of which I particularly enjoyed. Interestingly, on the performance intake there are two places which are not really very well sealed. These two places only have some very light foam glued on where the pieces join (one place is before the airbox and one is after the airbox). I suspected that the extra noise was coming out of the two places which were not well sealed.
I taped those two joints with silver air conditioning tape and things calmed right down. I cannot explain it, but the drone is nonexistent now and the low bass sound at low rpms (lugging the engine in too high of a gear) is much less now. I don't understand the effect of putting the intake on in combination with the exhaust, but the potential seems to be there for things to get louder. I guess that more air flow just begets more noise in general. I was hoping for better gas mileage and thought that I was getting it initially, but I guess that the engine sensor is sending more fuel now because of the better air flow because I am now getting the same gas mileage as before the mods. The great news is that the car sounds fantastic with the BMW performance exhaust and BMW performance intake combination and seems to run very smoothly when driving fast. I wanted the car to sound like a sports sedan, and it does now. My previous car was an Infiniti G37 which had a great exhaust sound and my 2011 328i sounds almost as good now. The BMW was completely silent before the mods. It is great fun to run the 328i now, and everything is very quiet until you step on it. There is no highway drone after the taping. I will replace the air conditioning tape with something that looks a little better like carbon fiber tape. Hot Toddy 2011 328i sedan |

I have both perf parts. I believe that while the HP gains are minimal if any, the combination of the intake and exhaust free up air flow, allowing quicker acceleration very noticably. The sound in my opinion is deep and rich. The carbon fiber intake is really nice, and when combined with the cf strut brace it is a pretty picture. I know its not cheap, but why would you put ANY aftermarket part on a BMW just to save money? The only non BMW thing I would ever consider would be rims.

I don't think you can go wrong with any intake(Injen or PE), but to me the injen sounds better. Both should be similar performance wise.
